URBAN LEGENDS: FINAL CUT follows film students at Alpine University who are struggling in their last semester of college to make a film for their thesis project that could win one of them the most prestigious award at the school. Amy Mayfield (Jennifer Morrison) and her fellow students are all hoping to win the Hitchcock award, given to one outstanding filmmaker each year. Amy, the daughter of a documentary filmmaker, has trouble creating a decent storyline for her film, until she encounters Reese, the lively security officer whose last place of employment was Pendleton University. Reese (Loretta Devine) mentions to Amy the story of what took place one year ago at Pendleton when eight students were murdered, and Amy soon has her film project underway.
As Amy begins putting the urban legends story into place, a real killer has surfaced surrounding the University. One female student is drugged while at a local bar and wakes up in a tub of ice cubes with her liver missing, the most popular of the urban legend stories. As the killer continues, many of Amy’s fellow students begin to disappear at the same time she is attempting to create a movie about the same occurrences. In the midst of the murders, Amy’s friend, Travis Stark (Matthew Davis), commits suicide after his thesis project is given a poor grade. The mysterious happenings lead Amy to investigate his suicide, and she stumbles upon Trevor, Travis’ twin brother. Trevor believes his brother was murdered, so the two decide to lure the killer to them in hopes of finding his or her true identity and purpose for killing the students.
The movie sets that Amy uses for her film set the stage for the terrifying murders occurring at Alpine University. As in most horror movie sequels, the murder scenes are more graphic in URBAN LEGENDS: FINAL CUT. Some are so gruesome, it makes watching difficult. It is apparent that the writers opted for a more disgusting movie as opposed to a scarier one. The movie also relies more on starlet factor than on a decent plot. Although Morrison and Devine gave valid performances, Davis is less than believable. His timing was poor, and it is obvious he was attempting to act suspicious, but it just comes off as bad timing. Joseph Lawrence, from TV’s BLOSSOM and GIMME A BREAK, is humorous as Graham, the cell phone carrying, fast-paced film student, who desperately wants to be a big-time Hollywood director.
URBAN LEGENDS: FINAL CUT attempts to follow in the success of the original URBAN LEGENDS movie, however, it fails in doing so on a number of counts. The acting is not up to par, the story is a little too outlandish, even for this type of movie, and the murder scenes are too violent and gruesome. An evil overtone is present throughout the movie, and it is overall a dark and sick story.
