WHAT ALICE FOUND is a lurid, low-budget tale about an 18-year-old woman named Alice, who runs away from her mother’s lower-class home in New Hampshire. Alice is attracted by the stories her bets friend tells her about life at college at Miami University, so Alice decides to join her friend. Alice dreams of being a marine biologist and working with dolphins, although she has no apparent skills leaning in that direction.
Alice gets only as far as Pennsylvania or so, when someone slashes her tires. A friendly retired couple, Sandra and Bill, traveling in a large RV, help her out. They offer to follow her with their van, but that night, Alice’s car mysteriously breaks down. Bill says the car won’t make it any further, so he and Sandra invite Alice to ride south with them.
Soon, Alice learns that Bill and Sandra are not exactly retired. In fact, Sandra works as a highway prostitute and Bill is her pimp. With no money, Alice succumbs to Sandra’s southern charm and her pragmatic way of looking at life. Sandra tells Alice that men, even her husband Bill, are a source of money, not a source of love. Eventually, Alice finds that she’s got more than she bargained for on this detour.
Although Alice learns her lesson by the end of the movie, Judith Ivey as Sandra makes prostitution and golddigging sound respectable and even inviting. The rebuke of Sandra’s apologia for female prostitution comes way too late in the movie and is far too mild. Laced with strong foul language, WHAT ALICE FOUND contains explicit sex scenes, extreme nudity in one scene, and partial nudity in other scenes. There is perhaps room in adult cinema for a truthful examination of the degradation of prostitution, but WHAT ALICE FOUND is not it.
