You have never seen anything quite like WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S ROMEO AND JULIET. Abuzz with quick music video style editing, colorful photography and art direction, and a rock & roll soundtrack, this version is set in a modern day setting reminiscent of Miami Beach. The movie begins with a TV newscaster telling us about the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. When the Capulets have a dress-up party, Romeo arrives dressed as a knight. When Romeo and Juliet see each other, the two quickly become enchanted with each other. Soon, they secretly marry. When Juliet is pledged to marry another suitor, she pretends death and tragedy results.
The director often uses style for style’s sake which represents the worst part of this movie. The art direction and clothing also scream extremism. This movie is filled with religious imagery. Both the Capulets and Montagues seem to have forsaken true worship for ritual. Thematically, this movie is filled with all the dramatic elements that has made Shakespeare so evergreen. It has hatred, rivalry, jealousy, rage, violence, love, and passion. As every student of drama realizes loves triumphs over hate in this classic story, but it is only at the expense of life itself, and young people may see the suicide as an escape, when, in fact, it is a tragedy.
