Season 3 of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS on Paramount+ opens with a bang as Captain Pike and the crew of the Starship Enterprise try to rescue some crewmembers and several hundred Non-Federation colonists kidnapped by a vicious Gorn lizard armada that’s planning to invade Federation space. The first episode of Season 3 of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS is thoroughly exciting, with some surprisingly positive references to God and faith, which shows why the STAR TREK franchise is still worth watching, whenever it sticks to themes that ennoble and uplift the human spirit rather than degrade it.

At the end of Season Two, a Gorn ship had captured some Enterprise crewmembers and several hundred Non-Federation colonists. The Enterprise would have tried to rescue all these people, but they are surrounded by an armada of Gorn spaceships. As Season 3 begins, Captain Pike has to order a retreat, but he finds a way to attach a homing device on the Gorn ship with the hostages.

Pike and the Enterprise return to Federation territory to warn his superiors that the Gorn have begun to attack colonies just beyond Federation territory. A large invasion is sure to come. Pike pleads with Admiral April to let him return so he can follow the Gorn ship carrying his crewmembers and the colonists. Officially, April orders Pike to monitor only the Federation borderline, but unofficially he permits Pike to enter Gorn space to rescue his crewmember.

Meanwhile, the crewmembers on the Gorn ship wake up to discover they’ve been placed in some digestion chamber. They decide to shoot their way out and save all the colonists.

Back on the Enterprise, Nurse Christine Chapel and Mr. Spock try to save the life of Capt. Pike’s girlfriend, Capt. Marie Batel, who’s been infected by Gorn eggs growing inside her body. They’ve tried to give her an antigen, but she’s allergic.

In Engineering, Lt. Scott is working feverishly to create a device that will let the Enterprise pose as a Gorn ship so it can follow the ship carrying the kidnap victims.

The first episode of Season 3 of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS is thoroughly exciting. It puts viewers on the edge of their seats. The character interactions and performances are touching, dramatic and even funny, whatever the mood requires. The crewmembers are there for one another and care about the fate of other people. They affirm life rather than deny it. Surprisingly, Capt. Pike acknowledges God and even recites the beginning of the Lord’s prayer as he visits his unconscious girlfriend in sickbay.

That said, Episode 301 has intense action scenes, scary aliens, and images of wounds on Pike’s girlfriend and other crewmembers who’ve encountered the Gorn. Also, one crewmember gets sick on the Gorn ship but recovers.

So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.
