More Detail:
TAROT is a supernatural horror movie about seven college students who become targets of supernatural characters when one of the students gives her friends astrology readings using a cursed deck of Tarot cards. TAROT has a few fun character flourishes but otherwise is a mediocre horror movie with a strong occult worldview overall, some extreme violence and lots of foul language, mitigated slightly by some moral, redemptive elements, though the characters eventually use the Tarot deck to turn the tables on the malevolent spirit who created the curse.
Led by Haley, the amateur astrologer, the seven college friends rent a mansion in the Catskills for a birthday party. Things turn awkward on their last night because of Haley’s recent breakup with one of the three guys. So, they try to lighten the mood by having Haley read their horoscopes using a strange deck of Tarot cards they found in the basement.
Haley gives each one of them a different Tarot card character, such as The Magician, The Fool and a Devil. Haley gets the Death card.
Back at campus the next night, supernatural versions of the Tarot characters stalk and try to kill the students. Two students are killed. So, the remaining five visit a female Tarot card expert they found online.
The expert says the Tarot cards belonged to an astrologer who in 1978 gave a horoscope reading for a Hungarian count. Her prediction that his wife and child would die in childbirth came true. So, he had his men kill the woman’s own daughter. In revenge, before committing suicide, she used her Tarot cards to kill the count and his friends. She also cursed the Tarot card deck.
Since then, several group murders have occurred involving the cards. The Tarot card expert was the sole survivor of the most recent murder spree. She urges the students to destroy the Tarot cards.
Of course, that proves to be easier said than done.
TAROT has a few fun character flourishes. For instance, Jacob Batalon of the new SPIDER-MAN movies delivers an endearing comic turn as the group’s nerdy member. Otherwise, however, TAROT is a rather pedestrian occult horror flick.
As such, the movie has a strong occult worldview promoting astrology and Tarot cards. The filmmakers mitigate this problem by showing the dangers of fooling around with astrology and Tarot cards. Also, the students try to fight the curse of the Tarot cards. In doing so, they risk their lives to save their surviving friends. They don’t always succeed, however. Also, in the end, they use the Tarot cards to defeat the curse. TAROT also has some extreme violence and many obscenities and light profanities. So, the movie is excessive and unacceptable.
The Bible condemns such occult practices as astrology and divination. In that light, it’s interesting to note that the Golden Calf worshipped by the Hebrews in the Book of Exodus is related, to one degree or another, to the Zodiac sign of Taurus the Bull. The Ancient Egyptians worshipped bulls long before Abraham and his great grandson, Joseph, encountered them.
