The movie opens as Layla and Derrick complete their final morning segment on their morning show, “Wake Up, Chicago!” They have different styles of working. Derrick has been hosting for five years and never strays from the teleprompter. Layla has only been there five months but brings a spontaneous exuberance to the show that Derrick thinks is dangerous. Somehow, however, the duo makes it work.
Layla is engaged to Brad, who visits her in between his foreign correspondent jobs that take him around the world. They agree on absolutely everything, which has led to them waiting a year to set a wedding date. Derrick is single but could never see himself with Layla.
One day, Layla and Derrick’s agent shows up to tell them a major network is looking to replace its legendary host. Both Layla and Derrick are qualified for the job and excited, but the spot’s only for one person. The co-hosts plan to put on the best show of their lives, but Derrick wants to play it safe while Layla wants to be creative.
Their plans are derailed, however, when someone leaves a baby with a note at the studio. Confused, Layla and Derrick discover that the baby’s mother died. The grandma, a massive fan of their show, wants the baby to be raised by stable, loving parents. Layla and Derrick panic at what they are to do, but Derrick reveals his sister and her husband are looking to adopt a child.
Both are relieved until a new problem arises. Derrick’s sister and her husband offer to adopt the baby, but they’re stuck at an airport. So, for one whole week, Layla and Derrick must find a way to work together and take care of the baby while prepping for the potential biggest step in their careers.
