More Detail:

VENOM: THE LAST DANCE spells trouble for Eddie Brock and Venom, Eddie’s alien symbiote, when the evil being with god-like powers that created the alien symbiotes discovers Venom’s location and sends an alien monster to get a genetic key that Venom has, which can free the evil villain from its prison on a distant planet. VENOM: THE LAST DANCE is, of course, filled with lots of action violence and mayhem, along with some strong foul language, but the movie surprisingly has some really heartfelt, redemptive moments when Venom and Eddie strengthen their friendship and try to save a family they meet along the way.

The movie opens with Eddie and Venom on the run from the law in San Francisco. They’ve escaped to another multiverse where they’re hiding out at a bar in another Mexico in another Earth. They leave that multiverse and go to the same Mexican bar on Earth.

After having a run-in with some Mexican thugs who are breeding dogs for illegal dogfights, they decide to go to New York City. Unknown to them, however, they’re being tracked by an alien monster. The monster has been sent by Knull, the evil being with god-like power who created all the alien symbiotes, including Venom. Eventually, the symbiotes got tired of Knull’s tyrannical rule and imprisoned him on a dark planet filled with monsters. However, Knull has managed to mentally subdue some of the monsters on the planet. Venom has a genetic key that can free Knull, who wants to ravage and subdue the universe. Knull has learned that Venom is now living on Earth. So, he’s sent one of the alien monsters to track down Venom and retrieve the genetic key, or Codex. Once he’s freed, Knull wants to travel to Earth, kill or subdue all the people, and rule the planet.

Eddie and Venom also have no idea they’re also being tracked by a military-led scientific task force. A female scientist, Dr. Penny Payne, played by Juno Temple, is capturing and studying alien symbiotes on Earth. Of course, the military, led by General Strickland (Chiwetel Ejiofor), wants to find a way to merge the symbiotes with American soldiers, which would greatly enhance their abilities. However, they’ve only just captured one man still attached to a symbiote, and Dr. Payne needs time to question the alien inside him to learn enough about the whole process.

To get to New York, Venom takes over Eddie’s body and attached itself to a passenger jet plane. By doing that, however, Venom has enabled the alien monster to find them. A fight ensues, and Venom and Eddie find themselves stranded near the desert where Area 51, and Dr. Payne’s underground laboratory, are located.

Eddie and Venom run into a quirky family led by a man named Martin, his wife and their young children, Echo and Leaf. Martin is an alien fanatic, and the family is traveling to Area 51 to get a peak at the famous facility. Martin tells Eddie he’s always wanted to meet an alien, and Venom jokes, “Why don’t we show him right now?” Eddie nixes that idea, and he and Venom soon are on their way.

However, General Strickland has tracked them down. He sends a special forces team to capture them, but Venom fights back by using his powers again. This, of course, attracts the attention of the alien monster.

Can Eddie and Venom avoid being captured? Can they evade the alien monster once again? One other thing. Venom has told Eddie the only way the Codex inside their bodies can become untraceable is if one of them dies.

VENOM: THE LAST DANCE is exciting and intense. It also has lots of humor. Eventually, more alien monsters from the villain appear, and Dr. Payne releases the other alien symbiotes to help fight them. The alien monsters all look virtually the same, and the other alien symbiotes look similar to Venom, except they appear in different colors. More creativity here would have been good.

That said, VENOM: THE LAST DANCE is surprisingly heartfelt. For example, despite their disagreements, Eddie and Venom have established a close friendship. Also, Eddie’s compassion has rubbed off on Venom. For example, after evading the soldiers and the alien monster, Eddie and Venom hitch a ride with Martin’s family to Las Vegas. Both Eddie and Venom develop a cute attachment to the parents and their two children during the little trip. Eventually, Martin’s family ends up sneaking onto Area 51 and gets caught up in the battle with the alien monsters. This leads to several heroic rescues by Eddie and Venom of Martin, his wife and their children. It also leads to an unexpectedly wonderful and heartrending redemptive ending. In fact, the whole third act in VENOM: THE LAST DANCE is one of the best conclusions in all the recent group of comic book action movies.

Of course, THE LAST DANCE has lots of intense action violence and many scary images of alien creatures. For example, the alien symbiotes have rows of nasty-looking sharp teeth. Even more of an issue is the movie’s foul language, which includes one “f” word and three strong profanities.

So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for any moviegoer thinking about seeing VENOM: THE LAST DANCE.
