What You Need To Know:

THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS is a merry animated romp. Pirate Captain tells his crew of bumbling pirates he’s going to enter the Pirate of the Year contest again, even though he’s lost many times before. He has stiff competition, but his men encourage him. They can’t seem to find any ships carrying any gold, however. Then, they stumble across Charles Darwin, the famous biologist. Darwin notices that Pirate Captain’s parrot, Polly, is not really a parrot at all but an extinct dodo bird. He convinces Pirate Captain to sail to London. He assures him that “untold riches” await them for displaying Polly in public to the Royal Academy of Science. When they get to London, however, it becomes clear that Darwin has an ulterior motive.

THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS is a funny, playful, clever animated movie for families. There’s very little, if any, really objectionable material. Best of all, Pirate Captain learns that being faithful to one’s friends is more important than fame, glory, or riches. THE PIRATES! is often very funny. It also turns out to be a heartwarming adventure for just about all ages.

Content:

(BB, AP, O, C, L, V, N, A, M) Strong moral worldview about a group of silly, bumbling pirates stresses doing the right thing and being faithful to friends over seeking fame and fortune, plus some very light anti-patriotic elements because Queen Victoria is a villain, a joke about a “ghost ship,” and St. Paul’s Cathedral is pictured in one shot; one old-fashioned use of the “h” word; light action and comic violence includes female villain fights Pirate Captain over rare bird that happens to be the Captain’s beloved pet, female villain falls through long shaft followed by barrels of vinegar, Pirate Captain and his pet bird dangle over menacing ship propeller, minor female pirate character stabs someone off screen with her sword to show how tough she is, tub full of pirates and bubbles slides down stairs as huge Easter Island statue tumbles after them, tub full of pirates and bubbles is flung through a roof and lands in street below, objects fall on top of one unconscious character during struggle for Pirate Captain’s pet bird, Pirate Captain slated for execution by executioner’s ax but he’s saved at the last minute though camera cuts to one character slicing up a ham, giant whale comes out of ocean and lands on pier in front of tavern door and pirate exits whale’s mouth with lots of gold coins, pirate accidentally cuts off head of stuffed monkey, and large fish swallows then spits out pirate ship; no sex; brief upper male nudity in painting of Pirate Captain during end credits; no drinking shown but a reference to drinking grog; no smoking or drugs; and, attempted stealing, pirates comically argue over whether looting is the best thing about being a pirate but decide that “Ham Nite” is the best thing, one pirate is clearly a woman hiding out as a pirate with a large fake beard but nobody ever notices she’s a girl, evolution dingbat Charles Darwin is a character, but he’s fictionalized and is lightly mocked because he looks like his monkey butler, and protagonist’s betrays his friends and his pet bird to pursue fame and glory but eventually does the right thing.

More Detail:

THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS is a merry animated romp from the folks who brought us CHICKEN RUN and WALLACE AND GROMMIT. It’s about a group of incompetent, silly pirates who get sidetracked on an adventure involving Queen Victoria, Charles Darwin, and a bird that was thought to have been extinct. The story opens in 1837. Queen Victoria is upset that pirates are still roaming the Caribbean. She orders her Navy to wipe them out.

Meanwhile, Pirate Captain interrupts his crew who are arguing about whether looting is the best thing about being a pirate. Pirate Captain tells them that, clearly, Ham Nite is the best thing about being a pirate. And, his crew heartily agrees as the captain joyfully cuts up the evening’s ham for them with his sword.

While everyone is enjoying Ham Nite, Pirate Captain tells his men that he’s going to enter the Pirate of the Year Contest again, even though he’s never won the prize. He has stiff competition, however, from three other pirate leaders. One of them has stolen a bag of gold, one has a giant ruby, and the third one brings a whole whale full of gold.

Everyone laughs at Pirate Captain, but his men have faith in him. So, they sail the open seas looking for the pirate booty that will help Pirate Captain win the contest. However, they have no luck at all. One of the ships they board turns out to be a plague ship. And, another ship turns out to be a ghost ship.

The final ship they board happens to be the one carrying Charles Darwin, the famous biologist. Darwin notices that Pirate Captain’s parrot, Polly, is not really a parrot at all but an extinct dodo bird. He convinces Pirate Captain to sail to London, where “untold riches” await them for displaying Polly in public to the Royal Academy of Science. When they get to London, however, it becomes clear that Darwin has an ulterior motive. Aided by his monkey butler, Mr. Bobo, Darwin (or “Chuck” as Pirate Captain calls him) wants to steal the glory all for himself by stealing Polly away from Pirate Captain.

THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS is a funny, playful animated movie for families. There’s very little, if any, really objectionable material. Best of all, Pirate Captain learns that being faithful to one’s friends is more important than fame, glory, or riches. Although Charles Darwin is a character in the story, the movie doesn’t promote evolution. In fact, Chuck is shown to be a star-struck man who just wants to find a girlfriend. He’s actually trying to steal Polly to give her to Queen Victoria, who turns out to be a villain. Also, there’s one funny comment about how much the Darwin character looks like his monkey butler.

THE PIRATES! is often very funny. It also turns out to be a heartwarming adventure for just about all ages. As usual with the folks at Aardman (CHICKEN RUN), the animation is terrific!
