What You Need To Know:

THE DESCENT is a horror movie about a girl named Sarah, who loses her husband and young daughter in a tragic car accident and is tottering on the brink of insanity. Her five friends take her cave diving in the Appalachian Mountains. As they are exploring a cave, their entrance gets blocked. Based on some hieroglyphics, they decide that there has to be another way out, and they continue into the earth. As they get deeper, they realize that cannibalistic people who have evolved to live in their surroundings are hunting them, and they must fight for survival.

THE DESCENT has a few moments of scares based mostly on the fast cutting camera work. After that, the movie seems to get lost in the gore and blood rather than the plot or theme. Thus, the last 40 or 50 minutes leave something to be desired. The acting is mediocre at best, and the effects are below par. Throughout the movie, the girls display an everyone-for-herself mentality and even turn on each other with the protagonist wounding and leaving one friend to die. There is also plenty of strong foul language.

Content:

(PaPa, Ev, VVV, LLL, A, D, MM) Strong pagan worldview with every character out for herself, plus some evolution elements; at least 43 mostly strong obscenities, including about 30 “f” words, and a few light exclamatory profanities; very strong violence such as car accident where poles slide off the roof of car and impale a father and little girl through their heads, in the cave a rope begins to slide out of control so one of the girls grabs it and rips her hand open, then one girl falls down a hole and breaks her leg with the bone sticking out, a creature jumps on a girl's back and bites her in the neck ripping her throat out, the main characters begins to fight with a creature and uses her climbing hook to stick it in the head and blood squirts everywhere, a girl takes her climbing hook and sticks it through one of the other girls' neck and blood goes everywhere, creatures take a girl down to their feeding lair and begin eating her intestines and insides, a girl takes her climbing hook and throws it through a creature's back, the protagonist takes a rock and crushes the head of another girl, the protagonist strangles a baby creature then falls into a pool of blood and emerges to beat a lady creature with a bone and splits creature's head open, girl gets attacked by a creature while dangling on a rope and gets her throat ripped out but stabs creature in the side, girl stabs creature in the chest, protagonist is covered with blood, the heroine takes a hook and sticks one of the creatures in the side of the head and takes her thumbs and press them through another creatures eyes, the other girl breaks a creatures leg and then breaks its neck, then the protagonist takes her climbing hook and stabs her friend in the leg and leaves her to die; some light drinking; no smoking, but two girls briefly smoke marijuana; and, people behave badly in a very intense, violent situation of deadly danger.

More Detail:

THE DESCENT is a horror movie about a girl named Sarah (Shauna Macdonald), who loses her husband and young daughter in a tragic car accident and is tottering on the brink of insanity. So, her five friends decide to take her cave diving in the Appalachian Mountains.

As they are exploring this cave, their entrance gets blocked but the cave system they studied showed that there were three ways in and out of the cave. As it turns out they are not in the cave system that they thought they were because one of the thrill seeking girls, Juno (Natalie Mendoza), took them to another system so that they could be the first to explore it and name it.

Based on hieroglyphics they find, they decide that there has to be another way out and they continue into the earth. As they get deeper, they realize that cannibalistic people who have evolved to live in their surroundings are hunting them, and now they must fight for survival.

THE DESCENT has a few moments of scares based mostly on the fast cutting camera work. After that, the movie seems to get lost in the gore and blood rather than the plot or theme. Due to this fact, the last 40 or 50 minutes leave something to be desired. The acting is mediocre at best and the effects are not up to par. Throughout the movie, the girls display an everyone-for-herself mentality and even turn on each other with the protagonist wounding and leaving one of her friends to die. THE DESCENT gets lost in very grotesque blood and gore and strong foul language, and the women literally stab one another in the back to escape.
