YOUTH IN REVOLT

What You Need To Know:

YOUTH IN REVOLT is the story of Nick who wants to be with the girl of his dreams, Sheeni. They concoct a plan where Nick will disobey all rules so that he will be kicked out of living with his mother and be sent to live with his father, who lives near Sheeni. Nick creates an “alter-ego” named Francois, played by the same actor. It is Nick as Francois who wrecks his mother’s car, sets a major fire, and other illegal activities. In the end, Nick is arrested for his illegal deeds, though because he’s a minor it’s stated that he will only be incarcerated for a few months. Nick is proud of his newfound rebellion.

YOUTH IN REVOLT at times is humorous. Michael Cera does a good job of playing both Nick and Francois. The directing is solid. The underlying message, however, is that rebellion is good, parents are bad, Christians are stupid, and immoral sex should be the goal of all teenagers. This is an abhorrent movie to avoid, not only for the illicit scenes and foul language but because the main message is so ungodly and immoral.

More Detail:

YOUTH IN REVOLT is exactly what the title expresses. It is the story of Nick, a geeky teenage boy who wants to be with the girl of his dreams, Sheeni. Nick meets Sheeni but she has a boyfriend, and she lives a few hours away from Nick. In order to be together, Nick and Sheeni concoct a plan where Nick will disobey all rules so that he will be kicked out of living with his mother and be sent to live with his father, who is now living near Sheeni. With this plan, Nick and Sheeni can be together. But, Nick will need to go against his nature and become rebellious.

Nick creates an “alter-ego” named Francois, who is played by the same actor. It is Nick as Francois who wrecks his mother’s car, sets a major fire, causes car accidents and destroys storefronts of two companies. It is Nick as Francois who sneaks into Sheeni’s bedroom and attempts to have sexual relations with her. The filmmakers have fun with the viewers seeing that it is Francois doing these deeds, but everyone in the movie only sees Nick.

In the end, Nick is arrested for his illegal deeds, though because he’s a minor it’s stated that he will only be incarcerated for a few months. Nick is proud of his newfound rebellion and, while he may suffer consequences for his actions, his bad heart and behavior are certainly not changed.

The movie at times is humorous. The use of animation is clever. Sadly, most of the cleverness is reserved for shots and scenes of erotic images, such as a book that Nick borrows that is a “how to” manual on sex coming to life. There is much discussion of sex, most of it very vulgar.

Michael Cera does a good job of playing both Nick and Francois and is maybe the ultimate nerdy teenager in search of a girl. The pacing is sharp and the direction solid.

YOUTH IN REVOLT’s underlying message is that rebellion is good, parents are bad, Christians are stupid, and immoral sex should be the goal of all teenagers. Sheeni’s parents are “religious fanatics” who are portrayed as frumpy, narrow-minded people who listen in on their daughter’s phone calls and calls Nick “of the devil.” These parents are served (unknown to them) psychotropic mushrooms, and they begin to “trip” and spread mashed potatoes all over their faces.

This is an abhorrent movie not only for the illicit scenes and foul language but because the take away message is so ungodly and immoral.
