Movieguide® and the Christian Family

By David Outten

Several studies have found that up to 90 percent of children abandon their parent’s values. We regularly hear about children of wonderful Christian friends who go off into some horrible prodigal son or daughter story.

How can Movieguide® help keep this from happening?

Here’s the basic problem. The world, from media to higher education, present life as if God is either non-existent or insignificant. Christianity is often presented as a silly, annoying social club full of those who are often better than thou.

Here’s the solution. This godless worldview is a recipe for disaster. It’s a path to ever increasing hell on earth. Christians need to be better ambassadors of heaven. Children are being sold into trips to hell because Christians are failing to sell trips to heaven.

In 2 Corinthians 5: 20,21 Paul says, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin [b] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Imagine being a salesman deciding who you wish to work for: God or Satan. You can sell peace, joy, patience, kindness, forgiveness and love, or you can sell lust, greed, envy, anger and bitterness. You can sell seeing yourself as a child of God or seeing yourself as a sex-crazed beast evolved from a tadpole. You can sell seeing yourself called to love others or called to find your own gratification regardless of what it takes. You can sell a world with right and wrong established by God or right and wrong established by whoever’s strong enough to force their will on others.

It’s amazing anyone wants to sell what Satan’s pushing, or that anyone would buy it, but both happen because Satan is the master of deceit. He began in the Garden of Eden simply casting doubt on God’s wisdom. He enticed his victims with the lure of knowing what God wants to keep secret. His lures today are what draw children away from faith in God.

Movieguide® exists to help explain what actually glorifies God and what threatens to lure audiences away. Face it, media is all about messages. Whether selling pizza or environmentalism the person making the media has a purpose. Some people have a purpose of luring children away from belief in God. They may seek to undermine marriage, fidelity, sobriety or even just civil dialogue, but the result is cracks in the belief that God wants what best for each of us.

Movieguide® offers books and courses on cultural and media wisdom. A profound part of our message is the importance of how infants are exposed to media. Infant’s brains are like a sponge. If you turn little children over to be babysat by media, they will be influenced by people with messages for them. One of the most popular messages to send children is that parents are not always right and rebellion is often necessary.

God would have us teach children the importance of forgiveness. I don’t have to tell you how much media justifies and encourages revenge.

All these messages undermine the core belief that God created us to love each other and live in a virtual state of heaven on earth. Children not raised to be ambassadors spreading the good news of God’s grace gradually loose their vision of God. He becomes insignificant, or flat wrong. Children don’t want to be called “bigots.”

MAUDE actually sold abortion as, “The kind and loving thing to do.” You can be presented as “hateful” if you own a motel and don’t want it used for prostitution. Good people can be run out of all sorts of businesses because media messages present standing for righteousness and hateful.

At Movieguide®, we rejoice in the pursuit of righteousness. We know it’s the ultimate loving thing to do. It’s the pursuit of heaven on earth.

You can help your children become, and stay, ambassadors for Christ if you see that the messages they get are from God and not from Satan. It is VITAL to keep Satan from babysitting your children whether they’re one or twenty-one.

The word “gospel” means “good news.” It’s the greatest message any media could present. At Movieguide® we’re profoundly thankful that more and more media contains good, wholesome messages. We are deeply grateful for all those who have partnered with us in encouraging the redemption of the media.
