A Movie About the Thai Cave Rescue is Coming from the Studio that Made GOD’S NOT DEAD

On July 10, 2018, a Thai boys’ soccer team was recused from a cave in Northern Thailand. Two and a half weeks earlier, the team found themselves trapped in the cave’s confines while exploring after practice amidst rising water conditions.

The team, called “Wild Boars” was discovered by a pair of British divers and rescue efforts ensued. The team consisted of 12 boys ranging from 11 to 16 and also involved their 25-year-old coach. After many attempts, Thai Navy Seals rescued the “Wild Boars”. They told THR, “We are not sure if this is a miracle, a science, or what.”

The story which received international attention is now being prepped to made into a movie according to Michael Scott, the co-creator, and CEO of Pure Flix Entertainment. Scott spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his recent aspirations to share the story with the world, stating, “The bravery and heroism I’ve witnessed is incredibly inspiring, so, yes, this will be a movie for us.”

The movie’s budget will be somewhere between $30 million and $60 million which surpasses the majority of Pure Flix’s productions which tend to be smaller budgeted movies.

Pure Flix has released movies like the GOD’S NOT DEAD series, THE CASE FOR CHRIST, and SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME. Although Scott stated that there’s no need to make this story a “Christian” movie, it simply needs to be an “inspirational one.”

Scott has a history of shooting movies in Thailand, filming five from 2008 through 2011. Along with his hands-on experience, he also and lives in Thailand part-time. For Michael Scott, the relationship he and his wife established with the Thai people carries a heavy significance for them. Scott said the story became even more ‘personal’ to him when former Sgt. Saman Kunan died Friday while volunteering as a rescuer since Kunan was Scott’s wife’s friend. “This isn’t just about a movie, it’s about honoring everybody involved, including the soldier who died,” he said.

Pure Flix’s co-founder David A.R. White told the Wall Street Journal that “It’s very important to us to be sensitive to the situation, as this is a personal story, it is not our goal to exploit this situation in any way, but to honor all those that are involved.” The studio is now on a search for screenwriters and actors.

Update: Variety has reported that John Chu is being lined up to direct a movie about the Thai cave rescue with another studio. Ivanhoe Pictures is working to secure the rights of the story.
