Christian artist Colton Dixon recently opened up about the first time he performed onstage and how it changed his life.

“Around 12 or 13 years old is whenever I sang for the first time in public,” he said in an interview with CCM Magazine. “[It was] a piano recital, I had taken [lessons] for a few years and was playing one of my favorite songs, ‘I Can Only Imagine’ by MercyMe, and my piano teacher set up a microphone, and he was like, ‘I feel like you need to sing this as well.’”

Dixon joked, “I’m like, ‘Hold on! I don’t think this is good for anybody. I sing in the shower; that’s about it.’ But I did. I had the guts to go out and do it.”

“I believe that was the first time I encountered the Holy Spirit, which is crazy,” he continued. “I just knew that music was going to be part of my story, and a part of how God told His story through me.”

Dixon explained that, as a teenager, he wasn’t sure what that meant — whether it would be leading worship at his local church or something on a “bigger scale.”

“I loved Christian music…I was like, ‘That would be so cool to one day get to do that,’” he said. “I had no idea what God had in store for me.”

Dixon has gone on to be one of the biggest names in Christian music, selling thousands of albums all over the world.

His latest single, “The Love I Have For You,” describes a time when Dixon “was trying to balance work, life, family, and everything in between,” per a statement he gave The Christian Beat.

“I prayed, ‘God, help me here, because I don’t know how much longer I can do this’…He says, ‘You’re going to absolutely get through whatever you’re facing because of how much I love you and the love you carry within.’”

Dixon wrote, “I can get into striving mode as a creative, and it trickles into other areas of my life. Resting in the fact I’m loved by the creator of the Universe is special though. The song reminds me with God’s love there’s nothing I can’t tackle.”

In an interview with ChurchLeaders, he said of the single, “I feel like I used to write songs for other people early in my career, but I feel like I am more and more writing songs for me now. And so this was a journal entry. This is something that I needed to be reminded of, and it’s been cool to see that there are others out there like me who need to hear it as well. So I’m pumped to see what this song does.”

Dixon might not have envisioned a career in music growing up, but with one performance, God changed his life forever.
