Christian artist Colton Dixon recently shared a video of unreleased song “In Spite Of Me” as a message for anyone who might feel hurt by the church.

“This one’s for those who have been hurt by the church…” he captioned a video of himself singing the song, which includes lyrics like, “I hope you find the reason to say that you believe // Just keep your eyes on heaven, it’s all you’ll ever need.”

In an interview with ChurchLeaders, he spoke about the inspiration for “In Spite Of Me,” saying, “My focus is more on the people. People affected, the rest of the world, because I believe the world bases their opinion on who God is based on those headlines, based on a direct encounter they have with the believer. And if I’m honest, that sucks.”

“I know we’re human. We’re not always the best representation of who God is [as] I think we need to be,” Dixon continued. “In the times that I fall short, I still hope you see the bigger picture because even though Christians will fail you — people will fail you — God never will. Period.”

Dixon has been releasing lots of new music lately. Earlier this summer, he dropped the single “The Love I Have For You,” which he called “really honest and raw” in his interview with ChurchLeaders.

“I feel like I used to write songs for other people early in my career, but I feel like I am more and more writing songs for me now,” Dixon explained. “And so this was a journal entry. This is something that I needed to be reminded of, and it’s been cool to see that there are others out there like me who need to hear it as well. So I’m pumped to see what this song does.”

The artist also recently celebrated a major milestone with his family — his twin daughters Dior and Athens just turned 5!

“It’s hard to believe Dior and Athens are turning 5!” he told PEOPLE. “Having them in our lives has been the greatest joy and we are excited for this next phase of life with them. Every day is an adventure! We are honored God chose us to be their parents.”

The AMERICAN IDOL alum shared that his daughters are already showing an interest in music, saying, “Every once in a while, little Dior, if music is on, she has this really soft, sweet voice. She’ll get real quiet and then she’ll start…we think it’s singing. It’s the cutest thing.”

Dixon hasn’t announced whether or not “In Spite Of Me” will get an official release any time soon, but fans of his music are hopeful he’ll put out a studio version of this powerful song!
