Pro golfer Scottie Scheffler recently shared how an invitation to attend church changed his life forever.

“I grew up going to Catholic church,” he said in a video shared to X. “I did not hear anything that was said, virtually, at all. I was just trying to basically count down the minutes ‘til church was over.”

Scheffler said when he went to college, he was no longer in the “protective bubble” of home, where “everything’s kind of taken care of…I get to college, I’m like, ‘Holy smokes, this is a totally different ballgame.’”

“I’m at this big place, I don’t really know anybody. I don’t really know why I’m here, why I wanted to get here so bad. I didn’t really understand the purpose,” he continued.

One day, a friend of Scheffler’s now-wife, Meredith, invited him to attend church with her.

“And I was like, ‘Yeah….probably the right thing to do. I should probably say yes,’” he said. “I went to church and I heard, probably for the first time, really who Jesus was.”

Scheffler continued, “I had no idea who Jesus was, what He’d done for us. I thought of God as this far-away person or this overseer that cared about us and kind of made rules and made decisions but, overall, was way out there and just looking down on us. I didn’t understand what sin was. I didn’t understand how sinful my heart was, or really how much I needed a savior.”

“After that, I’m always gradually giving up different parts of my life to Christ. I feel like each day, I’m trying to surrender something new,” the golfer explained. “I talk about it more as a gradual journey, versus just that one specific moment where it was like, ‘Oh, I understand it.’ It was like God was slowly pulling on my heartstrings for a period of time — and hopefully still pulling on that.”

Scheffler has previously spoken about the important role faith plays in his life. At a 2025 press conference, he said, “My faith and my family is what’s most important to me,” calling them his “greatest priorities.”

In another 2025 interview, he explained that his faith helps him put his career as a professional golfer into perspective.

“I feel like I’ve been given a gift to play golf, but at the end of the day, the golf tournament is over,” he explained. “You take your hat off, shake hands, and you move on. And so, my faith is such an important part of my golf game because it’s not only an important part of my life, but it’s what helps me kind of realize that it’s not that big of a deal.”

Scheffler continued, “I’m called to compete; I’m not called to go win every single golf tournament. Do I want to win every single golf tournament? Of course. But at the end of the day, that’s not what’s going to satisfy my soul.”
