A SOMEWHAT GENTLE MAN

What You Need To Know:

A SOMEWHAT GENTLE MAN is a dark Norwegian comedy. Middle-aged Ulrik gets out of jail after being in prison 12 years for killing the man who had an affair with his wife. His old crime boss gets him a job as his mechanic and a place to live with his older sister. The boss also gets Ulrik a gun to kill the man who squealed on Ulrik, the young brother of the man Ulrik killed. The boss tells Ulrik that, while Ulrik is in jail, he gave money to Ulrik’s wife and teenage son. Ulrik tries to make amends with his son, though Ulrik’s wife wanted the son to stay away from Ulrik and to think of Ulrik as dead. Meanwhile, Ulrik complicates his life even further by having affairs with his ugly landlady and the younger secretary who works at the garage where he works.

A SOMEWHAT GENTLE MAN has a dry, even witty comic tone. It won’t be to everyone’s taste, however. A bigger problem, of course, is the movie’s very graphic sex and explicit nudity. There is also much foul language, including some crude blasphemies uttered by the landlady.

Content:

(PaPaPa, ABAB, B, LLL, VV, SSS, NNN, A, D, MM) Very strong, very slightly mixed pagan worldview with strong blasphemy from side character and some moral content where ex-con tries to make amends with his son and can’t go through with an order to kill a man but otherwise the man is amoral and immoral; about 48 obscenities (including many “f” words) and nine profanities (all but one of which are said in a blasphemous context); strong but brief violence includes man shot dead point blank, another man chased with a gun and protagonist breaks man’s arms after the man was punching his own estranged wife; very strong sexual content includes scenes of depicted fornication and a scene of depicted sex between man and estranged wife; full male nudity when man stands up after sex scene and some shots of upper female nudity; alcohol use; smoking; and, intense birth scene but nothing shown other than water breaking, criminal behavior, criminals buy illegal guns, lying, and protagonist’s son is not married to his live-in pregnant girlfriend.

More Detail:

A SOMEWHAT GENTLE MAN is a dark Norwegian comedy about a middle-aged ex-con who gets into trouble trying to satisfy the desires of other people, including his crime boss.

Ulrik gets out of jail after being in prison 12 years for killing the man who had an affair with his wife. His old crime boss gets him a job as a mechanic and a place to live with his older sister. The boss also gets Ulrik a gun to kill the man who squealed on Ulrik, the younger brother of the man Ulrik killed. The boss points out to Ulrik that, while Ulrik was in jail, he gave money to Ulrik’s wife and teenage son. Ulrik tries to make amends with his son, though he never wrote to him while he was in jail and Ulrik’s wife wanted the son to stay away from Ulrik and to think of Ulrik as dead.

Meanwhile, Ulrik’s ugly landlady feeds him dinner and mistakenly thinks Ulrik has the hots for her. Ulrik obligingly complies with her lust, partly because she’s a very good cook. Shortly thereafter, Ulrik defends the secretary at his garage against her violent ex-husband. The secretary becomes interested in Ulrik, so he begins an affair with her, even though he keeps up the convenient affair with the ugly landlady.

The order to kill the informant, and Ulrik’s duplicitous relationship with the two women, lead to comical complications. Ulrik decides there’s only one way to keep himself out of jail.

A SOMEWHAT GENTLE MAN has a dry and even witty comic tone. It won’t be to everyone’s taste, however. A bigger problem, of course, is the movie’s very graphic sex and explicit nudity. At one point also, Ulrik is shown completely naked. In addition, the landlady utters some crude blasphemies in a couple scenes. The blasphemies are meant as a joke, but God, and people of faith, will not be amused. Finally, A SOMEWHAT GENTLE MAN has plenty of strong foul language. Also, the solution Ulrik comes up with to deal with his boss, although it has an element of divine justice, is still a violent one.

All in all, despite some moral elements where Ulrik defends the secretary, bonds with his son and the son’s pregnant common law wife, and refuses to kill the informant, A SOMEWHAT GENTLY MAN ultimately reflects the abhorrent, aimless secular paganism gripping so much of Europe.
