6 Movie Songs That Inspire Hope in the Face of Uncertainty

By Jenny Frye, Contributing Writer

In the last couple weeks, drastic changes have taken place around the globe in the wake of COVID-19. In the United States, facilities have closed including schools, colleges, bars, restaurants, and churches. Additionally, it is undetermined how long these circumstances will exist, and the unknown can be overwhelming. However, here are 6 movie songs that inspire hope in the face of uncertainty…

  1. “Only Hope” from A WALK TO REMEMBER

A WALK TO REMEMBER follows the story of “bad boy” Landon Carter as he falls in love with a girl named Jamie Sullivan who has a strong moral and Christian compass. They perform in the school play together where Jamie Sullivan (played by Mandy Moore) sings the song “Only Hope.” The song talks about faith in God being the only hope during times of despair exhibited by the lyrics: So I lay my head back downand I lift my hands and prayto be only yours I pray, to be only yours I know now you’re my only hope.” Switchfoot also covered “Only Hope” for the movie.

  1. “I Still Believe” from I STILL BELIEVE

I STILL BELIEVE is the true story based on the Christian singer, Jeremy Camp, during his marriage with his wife Melissa. Jeremy Camp wrote the song “I Still Believe” encouraging others to believe even when dealing with loss and hardship. Many of the lyrics translate now as the world is faced with uncertainty during the coronavirus. Although times are scary, “I still believe in your holy word.” Most importantly, the lyrics “Even when I don’t see, I still believe,” help others to hold faith in God even when immediate results aren’t shown.

  1. “I Can Only Imagine” from I CAN ONLY IMAGINE

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE is a story of redemption and reconciliation based on the most-played Christian contemporary song, “I Can Only Imagine” by MercyMeChristians everywhere can find comfort in the lyrics “I can only imagine when all I would do is forever, forever worship you.” The lyrics offer hope that one day we will be in the presence of God, free from pain or fear, and we can worship him forever.

  1. “I’m Standing with You” from BREAKTHROUGH

BREAKTHROUGH follows the story of a young boy and his family after he tragically falls through ice and must fight for his life. The song “I’m Standing with You” is sung by Chrissy Metz and even won an Oscar. Many people will resonate with the lyrics as they explain that through trying times God is “standing with you.” More lyrics include that when “you just feel like giving up, well, I won’t let you, through whatever you go throughI’m standing with you.” In times when we are scared and feel like giving up, it is inspiring to know that God is by our side.

  1. “Overcomer” from OVERCOMER

OVERCOMER follows the story of John Harrison, who reluctantly takes on a coaching position for a high school cross country team. His outlook changes as he is inspired by a girl on the cross country team and her devoted faith. The song “Overcomer” performed by Mandisa reminds people that God will help us to overcome and conquer fear, struggle, and evil. Some inspiring lyrics from the song are, “Stay in the fight ’til the final round, you’re not going under cause God is holding you right now.”

  1. All I’ve Ever Needed” from GRACE UNPLUGGED

GRACE UNPLUGGED is a story about a young girl who wants stardom in the music industry but finds herself compromising her religious values to get there. The song “All I’ve Ever Needed,” proves that God dominates worldly items and that even through the chaos in the world, all we need is Christ’s love. Some lyrics include “To get back to where I belongLord, all I’ve ever needed was your love.” If we feel lost and scared, it is comforting to know that we can always turn to God’s love.
