Alicia Keys Is So ‘Grateful’ Her Mother Opted Out of Abortion

By Allyson Vannatta, Staff Writer

In an interview with CBS News Correspondent Tracy Smtih, Grammy award-winning singer and pianist, Alicia Keys, opened up about how her mom almost aborted her.

In her new book, “More Myself: A Journey,” Keys starts at the very beginning detailing her mom’s choice to almost have an abortion.

Smith said, “Your mom talks about how she nearly had an abortion.”

Keys responded,

“Right. Even her mother said to her, ‘Terry, you never do anything easy.’ She was making a really big choice. And at the time, I’m sure she didn’t even know why she was making that choice exactly. But she knew it. She knew what she needed to do.”

As we all know, Keys’ mother didn’t go through with the abortion.

Instead, she raised her daughter alone, struggling financially, in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City.

“She raised a girl in the middle of Hell’s Kitchen, which looked like it sounds, you know?” Keys said.

Smith followed questioning, “It was rough?”

“Hard, dangerous, difficult, scary,” Keys said. “I can’t even imagine, as a mother today, me sending my kid off into those streets. But if you had to, I mean, what’s she gonna do? She had to go to work, I had to go to school. We had to live. That’s how it is.”

“I am so grateful to her for choosing me. And I really appreciate her.”

Keys’ mother’s decision allowed her daughter to become the valedictorian of her high school. It also allowed her to get a scholarship to Columbia University, and a contract with Columbia Records.

She chose the record deal, and the rest is history.

Even though her mother made a pro-life decision, the musician has expressed on social media that she is pro-choice.

Please pray that Keys is convicted by her mother’s decision and realizes that new life is a gift from God.
