Discovery Channel Looks to Create Streaming Service Similar to Hulu

By Allyson Vannatta, Senior Writer

Popular cable television network Discovery wants to create its own version of Hulu.

Ad Age reported that Discovery looks to combine its suite of channels, which consist of HGTV, Animal Planet, TLC, Discovery, and more, to create its own streaming service.

Discovery’s Chief Executive Officer David Zaslav, said on an earnings call that the company sees, “An opportunity to take content on a broader basis to mount an attack on those who are not existing cable subscribers, aggregating all of our content in the U.S. and having something that looks very different.”

These comments came after the company experienced a surge in stocks during the third quarter in 2019.

Discovery has been cautious about making their content available for non-cable subscribers. However, the network believes this could be the right time to make the move.

The media giant had limited their non-cable options mostly to European countries and certain niche audiences.  Now that many people in the U.S. are cutting the cord due to price, the company needs new ways to get their content to screens.

Their streaming service would mirror Disney-owned Hulu, which makes broadcast content available on the platform for those who don’t have cable.

The news of a possible streaming service comes after the company partnered with HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines and the BBC’s natural history programming to launch new video services.

Movieguide® previously reported that the launch of the Gaines’ new network, Magnolia, has been delayed due to the coronavirus.

Along with the news of a delayed launch, the couple announced the lineup of shows that will appear on their new network:

  • GROWING FLORET
  • HOME ON THE ROAD
  • BESPOKE KITCHENS
  • FAMILY DINNER
  • RESTORATION ROAD
  • THE FIELDHOUSE
  • SUPER DAD
  • HOME WORK
  • THE LOST KITCHEN
  • INN THE WORKS

Meanwhile, Discovery has made family-friendly content free to stream during the virus.

According to Cord Cutters News:

The “Family Favorites” collection includes full seasons of series from Discovery’s collection of networks, including Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Animal Planet, Science Channel, Cooking Channel, and DIY. The content is commercial free and requires no sign-in.

“Now more than ever, Discovery and our partners are committed to nourishing our superfans with the brands, shows and talent they love,” said Peter Faricy, CEO, Direct-to-Consumer, Discovery, Inc. “As families are spending more time at home, we know parents are looking for premium content they can watch with their children, content that will bring them together. We are excited to team up with our affiliate and distribution partners to offer them the best of our family-friendly programming, free and uninterrupted through our GO apps and sites and our partners’ consumer experiences.”
