Watch:

What You Need To Know:

AFTER SO MANY DAYS is an intimate backstage look into the 365-day tour of a newly married couple’s band as they pursue their dream of performing music for a living. Jim and Samantha resolve to play a concert every day for a year. They travel to 14 different countries, documenting their journey along the way. Not only will the year-long adventure test them as musicians, it will also test their marriage.

AFTER SO MANY DAYS explores Jim and Sam’s pursuit of their dream to perform music for a living, and the highs and lows of their tour and marriage. The documentary has a raw handheld feel. Many interactions with people and music will bring a smile to the viewer’s face. Although the movie has an endearing quality and promotes perseverance in marriage and making sacrifices for one’s spouse, it has a strong Romantic worldview, which stresses personal artistic expression and establishing emotional connections to other people. AFTER SO MANY DAYS also contains plenty of foul language, including 20 or so “f” words and a strong profanity. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.

More Detail:

AFTER SO MANY DAYS is an intimate backstage look into the 365-day tour of the band Jim and Sam as they pursue their dream of performing music for a living.

The movie opens with Jim Hanft on the phone with a booking agent from the Netherlands. Audiences are then introduced to Jim and Sam’s band as they perform their original music in a barbershop. The music continues to play as the movie cuts to Jim and his wife of four months, Samantha Yonack, working to write a bio and prepare for a crazy venture of playing one concert every day for an entire year.

The documentary wastes little time. The newlyweds are soon playing their original music in venues in Chicago and Minneapolis, leaving their Los Angeles apartment and their dog behind. After 20 or so shows around the United States, Jim and Sam take their music to Sweden. This is a return to the band’s roots in a way, because Sweden is where the couple first recorded music together.

Although Jim and Sam had concerts planned for up to two months out, at the end of the two months, a blizzard hits the Northeast U.S., and Jim and Sam experience one of the first of many future unforeseen obstacles in their 365-day challenge. After a sub-par attempt at a friend’s restaurant, they resort to walking the streets until finding an Ice Cream shop.

This becomes a theme for the rest of the tour. After the beginning of the new year, the band is told that many of their booked shows for the next couple months have been canceled. Along with the uncertainty of booking venues, the cost of living forces Jim to take website design jobs alongside the strenuous show schedule.

As Jim and Sam continue their tour in the U.S. and overseas, they begin to realize that their Romantic, idyllic notion of playing at great venues every night is easier said than done. As the physical strain of playing every day takes a toll on their bodies, their relationship is also tested through the stressful adventure. Jim and Sam begin to question whether their time could be used more wisely. Will the audience responses and the people they meet along the way keep them strong?

AFTER SO MANY DAYS is an intimate backstage look at Jim and Sam’s pursuit of their dream and the various highs and lows of their tour and marriage. The documentary has a raw handheld feel. Also, many of the genuine interactions with people and music will bring a smile to the viewer’s face. Ultimately, AFTER SO MANY DAYS is a testament to grassroots filmmaking. For example, Jim and Sam shoot and edit most of the movie themselves. However, although the movie has an endearing quality and promotes perseverance in marriage and making sacrifices for one’s spouse, it has a strong Romantic worldview overall, which stresses personal artistic expression and establishing emotional connections to other people. AFTER SO MANY DAYS also contains plenty of foul language, including 20 or so “f” words and a strong profanity. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.
