Scarlett Johansson Praises Black Widow’s Integrity: ‘She’s Not Afraid to Admit When She’s Wrong’

Editor’s note: The following story contains major spoilers for the AVENGERS franchise, particularly AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

Few movies have been as anticipated as BLACK WIDOW, the Marvel movie set to explain more about the mysterious Natasha Romanoff. It’s also the first glimpse fans have of Natasha after she bravely sacrificed herself in AVENGERS: ENDGAME to save the world.

For Scarlett Johansson, who plays the titular character, the sacrifice is indicative of Black Widow’s character as a whole.

“She has a lot of integrity,” Johansson said at the world press conference for BLACK WIDOW. “She is a big character, and she’s not afraid to admit when she’s wrong. She’s endearing that way. She’s curious about herself and curious about other people, and I think it makes her stand out as a super hero, too.”

David Harbour, who plays Natasha’s “father” Alexei, says the movie also includes some reflections about growing from past mistakes.

“The humor of his character [is] because he is filled with grief and remorse about the choices that he’s made like, emotionally, spiritually, nutritionally,” Harbour says.

“So in other words, he has to be some bombastic because he can’t stop and feel these things, the failures that he made.  So he has to build around him a world of, like, a confabulatory, psychotic reality,” Harbour continues.

The movie also addresses some serious issues such as human trafficking and the dangers of a communist government.

According to the Movieguide® review:

BLACK WIDOW (2021), Marvel and Disney’s new superhero movie, opens on her life years ago, when Natasha and her sister, Yelena, were taken from the world they know in Ohio and flown to Communist Cuba. They are put into “The Red Room,” a place where the Soviet Union brainwashes young girls and trains them to kill. Natasha eventually defects from the program, however. Years later, after the events in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, Natasha and her sister get together and want to go back to rescue the other girls from the harm being done to them.

BLACK WIDOW (2021) is an action-packed movie with lots of spectacle. The movie starts out with a great introduction, showing communism brainwashing children and controlling them, but the plot is pretty basic for a movie spanning almost two and a half hours. BLACK WIDOW has a strong moral worldview that shows the harms of sex trafficking and governmental control. There’s also some Christian, redemptive content, including a prayer and forgiveness. The violence in BLACK WIDOW is a little excessive, however. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong caution.

BLACK WIDOW is in theaters on July 9.
