Kanye West Says Surprise Drop of New Album ‘Donda’ Released By Universal Without Consent

By Movieguide® Staff

After several delays and listening parties, Kanye West’s highly anticipated album, “Donda,” dropped on Aug. 29.

Named after West’s late mother, Donda West, the album is the 22-time Grammy Award winner’s tenth studio album.

However, in a recent post, West claimed that Universal released “Donda” without his approval.

“UNIVERSAL PUT MY ALBUM OUT WITHOUT MY APPROVAL AND THEY BLOCKED JAIL 2 FROM BEING ON THE ALBUM,” he wrote in one of his two posts on Instagram.

Controversy over “Jail Pt 2” came after West refused to drop the 24th track from “Donda” despite the featured artist, DaBaby, coming under fire for alleged homophobic comments.

Although West shared some information on his Instagram, it has since been deleted.

Fox News reported:

The photos showed a text exchange with West and his manager, Bu Thiam. West is informed that DaBaby’s manager won’t give clearance for the song to be included. West refused to take the rapper, who is in the midst of a scandal over homophobic comments he made at a recent show, off the album. West reportedly noted that DaBaby was one of the only people to publicly support his bid for president in 2020.

Fortunately, whatever legal dispute prevented “Jail Pt 2” from coming out with the initial release of “Donda” has been rectified. Variety reports that the track was made available on all streaming platforms around 1 p.m. EST on Sunday.

The whole album includes 27 total songs, many of which speak to West’s faith in God.

In “Keep My Spirit Alive,” West sings alongside KayCyy, Westside Gunn, and Conway the Machine.

One of the Chorus reads: “More than enough / You can take it all, but the Lord on my side / Spirit won’t die, yeah Oh, my life / Is in His hands, so I don’t stress, I pray and strategize.”

Another line read: “And I don’t do commercials ’cause they too commercial / Give it all to God and let Jesus reimburse you.”

Other songs have titles that hint at the album’s faith themes, like “Jesus Lord,” “Lord I Need You,” “Praise God,” and “God Breathed.”

West’s previous album, “Jesus is King,” surprised audiences with its gospel influence and different message compared to his past albums.

The 2020 Billboard Music Awards were held Wednesday, and West was nominated for nine Billboard awards. The 43-year-old entertainer took home four. West won all three of the Gospel categories including, Top Gospel Artist, Top Gospel Album, and Top Gospel Song for “Follow God.”
