Can Movie Villains Carry iPhones? Director Reveals the Truth
By Movieguide® Contributor
Some of cinema’s most iconic plot twists happen when the true villain reveals himself to the audience.
Although it can be challenging to decipher who’s going to turn into a villain, director Rian Johnson recently revealed that all the audience must do is look at the character’s phone.
The STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI director uncovered a long-kept secret about Apple products, which is prominent in his crime thriller, KNIVES OUT.
“I don’t know if I should say this or not,” Johnson said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “Apple…they let you use iPhones in movies but – and this is very pivotal if you’re ever watching a mystery movie – bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.”
Johnson joked that other filmmakers will have to get creative now that moviegoers can predict who the heroes and villains are.
“Oh no, every single filmmaker that has a bad guy in their movie that’s supposed to be a secret wants to murder me right now,” he laughed.
Apple products are some of the most popular when it comes to onscreen deals. From network television to streaming, sitcoms to action movies, an iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer is bound to appear.
According to their guidelines for media that use their products, Apple products should only be shown “in the best light, in a manner or context that reflects favorably on the Apple products and on Apple Inc.”
Maybe this secret will help viewers figure out who the villain is in Johnson’s upcoming KNIVES OUT 2.
Here is a portion of Movieguide®’s review for KNIVES OUT:
KNIVES OUT is a surprisingly accomplished dark comedy, with an all-star cast that delivers the goods. The humor is intelligent and the story keeps viewers guessing, with many unexpected twists. The moral of the story is surprisingly positive, with major themes about the importance of truth and doing the right thing, even when it’s not in one’s favor. However, KNIVES OUT contains lots of foul language, some lewd content and brief marijuana use. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.
