6 Nominations That Prove the Oscars Still Don’t Get It

By Movieguide® Staff

With today’s release of the Academy Award nominations, we’re reminded that the Oscars still don’t get it. While there were some uplifting nominations, the vast majority of the titles are lackluster, promoting progressive agendas and gratuitous content.

When will the voting members of the Academy realize that these titles bombed at the box office? Moviegoers don’t want excessive content – we want inspirational and redemptive elements that encourage us to draw closer to our faith, family and morals.

Here are some of the nominations that prove how out of touch the Academy Awards are:

DON’T LOOK UP

The satire in DON’T LOOK UP seems overbroad. Also, though it makes some insightful points about feckless TV journalists, feckless politicians and a celebrity-obsessed culture, much of its satirical anger is directed at conservatives, a Trump-like politician and people who doubt the science behind questionable things like apocalyptic climate change or draconian COVID-19 protocols. DON’T LOOK UP contains abundant “f” words and some strong profanities. In addition, one scene typing up a loose end at the end shows totally naked men and women.

Nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing

THE POWER OF THE DOG

Well-acted but slow, THE POWER OF THE DOG tells a disturbing, politically correct tale of jealousy, perversion and murder. By the end, the movie suggests that homosexuality is the result of society’s repression and oppression of such behavior and relationships. Also, the young man’s mother comes across as a weak person, which doesn’t quite ring true. THE POWER OF THE DOG contains some foul language, violence, partly obscured explicit male nudity, and unnecessary meanness. MOVIEGUIDE® rates this movie abhorrent.

Nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Screenplay, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Director, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Achievement in Sound, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing

WEST SIDE STORY

The love story, music and dancing in this version of WEST SIDE STORY have their moments. However, they’re marred by clunky directing, muddled dialogue, and bad casting. The standout in the cast is Ansel Elgort, who plays Tony. He has great charisma and an excellent voice. WEST SIDE STORY has a light Christian, moral worldview. Eventually, love overcomes the racial animosity between the two gangs. The positive worldview in WEST SIDE STORY is marred by strong pagan, immoral behavior, including many strong, gratuitous profanities.

Nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Director, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography

NIGHTMARE ALLEY

NIGHTMARE ALLEY is a striking production, with superb performances. It’s basically a morality tale about a man whose selfish ambition and pride get the better of him. As such, it’s a tragedy, but it’s a dark tragedy. Sadly, NIGHTMARE ALLEY has lots of strong foul language. It also contains some very disturbing scenes of violence, scenes of implied adultery, brief occult content, nudity, and a politically correct, leftist view of America. So, despite some positive moral lessons, NIGHTMARE ALLEY is a bit excessive.

Nominated for Best Picture, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design

BEING THE RICARDOS

BEING THE RICARDOS has very little joy, the drama is all dialogue, and the movie shows very little of the charm that Lucille Ball had in real life. BEING THE RICARDOS has a Romantic worldview. Lucille Ball makes a point for communism, while Desi Arnaz makes a point for the American Dream. For a movie based on a beloved TV comedy, there is little laughter in this movie. There’s little to commend about BEING THE RICARDOS, and audiences that loved I LOVE LUCY won’t feel the same way about this movie.

Nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role

THE LOST DAUGHTER

THE LOST DAUGHTER is a well-acted drama about the inner turmoil of a mother and wife, and her desire for freedom. Leda abandons her children after having an affair with another man. While she returns to her children, the trauma and battle for freedom continue to haunt Leda. There’s no hope for Leda as she falls prey to her selfishness. Despite the negative consequences for Leda’s actions, THE LOST DAUGHTER contains little to no redemptive qualities, a negative view of raising children, and excessive sex and foul language.

Nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Adapted Screenplay, Actress in a Leading Role
