If Science Proves Porn Damages Your Brain, Why Does Mainstream Media Push Sexual Immorality?

As technology advances, neuroscientists are better equipped to assess, in detail, how regular consumption of pornographic material and drugs affects the human brain, according to the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE).

A recent article highlighted research published in 2014 by Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Human Development and how porn changes the structure and functionality of consumer’s brains.

MPI analyzed the brains of 64 men between the ages of 21 and 45 and found that the more porn that the men had watched correlated with the amount that their brains had changed.

NCOSE reported:

1. The heavier users had less grey matter in the striatum, a part of the brain’s reward system associated with motivation and decision-making. Less grey matter in this area could mean these users had grown less responsive to stimulation by pornography.

2. These users had a weaker brain response when shown sexual pictures.

3. The brain circuitry between the prefrontal cortex (the decision-making part of the brain) and the reward system was reduced.

Even moderate pornography use may decrease the ability to make good decisions and feel pleasure normally.

Regardless of where they start, porn users may eventually feel the need to seek more extreme, perhaps abusive or illegal, content as a result of brain changes that numb their pleasure response.

While pornographic sites are easily accessible to anyone who knows how to operate a phone, more and more of today’s movies, TV shows, and social platforms blur the line between “adult” content and mainstream media.

As parents, medical professionals and now some legislators seek to fight to protect children from sexual exploitation, the pool of media that requires discernment grows larger. Unfortunately, many innocent viewers risk jumping in the deep end without knowing it.

As audiences of all ages flock to prominent streamers like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+, traditional broadcast television grows obsolete. Not only is there more content, but that content is easily and widely accessible by anyone who knows how to turn on a TV.

Unfortunately, a saturated market leaves parents with the difficult task of protecting their children from seeing immoral movies and shows. One especially concerning area is the constant advertisement by streamers for animated shows geared towards adults.

However, streamable cartoons filled with extreme sexual content, language, and violence are not hidden on Adult Swim after the children go to bed—they are available 24/7.

Although streamers have released “safety” features to block users from accessing the graphic content, they are far from fool-proof.

Netflix leads the way in promoting the animated atrocities that, on the outside, look similar to your child’s favorite shows.
