THE MOST RELUCTANT CONVERT Releases On AppleTV, Google Play and DVD

By Movieguide® Staff

After a successful limited theatrical release that earned $33M at the box office, THE MOST RELUCTANT CONVERT: THE UNTOLD STORY OF C.S. LEWIS is now available on Apple T.V., Google Play, DVD, and Blu-ray.

The movie is based on the hit stage play C.S. Lewis on Stage: The Most Reluctant Convert, adapted by and starring Max McLean.

“We’ve been honored by how the film has resonated with audiences across the country,” lead McLean said in a recent press release. “Lewis’ books have sold more than 250 million copies, and it’s thrilling to know that we can continue to share the fascinating story of C.S. Lewis’ life to more people in their own homes on a much broader scale.”

Although THE MOST RELUCTANT CONVERT initially planned for a one-night-only event in theaters, fan support resulted in the movie remaining in theaters for over a month.

Max McLean portrayed C.S. Lewis in the new movie, A MOST RELUCTANT CONVERT, which added new theater dates after a successful $1.2 million opening in just 400 theaters across the country.

“When we began working on our distribution of the film, we had a handful of theatres, mostly in major markets, with one showing on one day on November 3,” McLean told CBN. “I am grateful to the tens of thousands of people who came out to fill theaters in almost every major city throughout the country.”

A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads

THE MOST RELUCTANT CONVERT is a drama about how C.S. Lewis went from being an atheist to one of the greatest defenders of the Christian faith in the 20th Century. It opens with Max McLean nervously checking his script, and then walking onto the set, where he becomes C.S. Lewis reminiscing about his conversion. Some scenes are re-enacted with actors. The movie details Lewis’ sad childhood, his exploits during World War I, and his life at Oxford University, where he encountered Christians. By 1929, Lewis reluctantly became a theist, and by 1933, a full believer in Christ, and one of the most influential Christian apologists of all time.

THE MOST RELUCTANT CONVERT is moving and inspiring. Max McLean does a terrific job as Lewis, and the actors bring the story alive. THE MOST RELUCTANT CONVERT is a tremendous movie to show to non-Christians. The movie is probably not for young children with the death of the mother, the collapse and lack of a father’s love, the horrors of World War I, and other elements, but, for teenagers and above, it’s a great movie.

Movieguide® previously reported on McLean’s connection to C.S. Lewis and his work:

Max McLean, the author who plays Lewis in the upcoming movie, shared his insights into the author: “[Lewis] lost his mother to cancer at the age of 9, he had a terrible relationship with his father … and he also experienced a butchery of being in the trenches of World War I, and he came to the conclusion after that that either there’s no God behind the universe, a God who’s indifferent to good and evil – or worse, an evil God.”

However, Lewis ultimately accepted Christ as his Savior and used his salvation to evangelize and comment through his writing, which has had a profound effect on many believers even to this day, including McLean.

McLean was also an adult convert to Christianity and credits Lewis for helping him “navigate the Christian faith in a way that’s deep, that’s profound.”

“Being an adult convert, you bring a lot of doubts and baggage with you because … belief is hard,” he told The Christian Post. “People that are raised in a faith, their souls, their conscience are formed. That belief becomes an integrated part of who they are. An adult convert has to undo so much. And Lewis had the same experience. So he just helped guide my way.”
