Kirk Cameron And Dan Kimball On How NOT To Read The Bible

By Movieguide® Contributor

Actor Kirk Cameron and pastor Dan Kimball took on controversial topics in the Bible such as slavery and the role of women in the church in a recent episode of TBN’s TAKEAWAYS.

“TikTok videos and memes … are telling people that if they read the Bible they’ll become atheist, and they’re using misapplied Bible verses to critique and undermine the Bible,” Cameron said.

Kimball used an example of a meme that shows a woman with tape over her mouth and the reference, 1 Corinthians 14:34—where Paul tells the Corinthian church that women should be silent in church. Kimball points out that it is important for people to look at the full context of scripture.

“Don’t just read a Bible verse in isolation. Always be asking who is it written to and why,” Kimball said, adding: “[The] posture of learning at that time was to actually be quiet and so you would be learning more. [The verse was] not a slam directly against women to actually be quiet all the time in churches.”

Kimball said that taking scripture out of context “makes it more conducive for a Christian, a younger Christian, to say maybe I can’t believe this.”

“The Bible is so pro-women,” Kimball said. “But people are taking little verses and then trying to make a case against the scriptures from isolated verses like that.”

Kimball also addressed the argument that the Bible is pro slavery.

“The Bible itself is 100 percent anti-slavery the way we think of slavery,” Kimball said, quoting from Exodus 21:1, which outlines the punishment for selling someone into slavery.

“Then we‘ll see in the New Testament the trajectory of when people were becoming followers of Jesus and saying all people are equal before God. You’ll see that as the start of the movement to abolish kidnapped slavery,” Kimball added.

Kimball said: “We have to be educating children, youth, young adults, in how to study the scriptures now and not avoid these passages. Because
they’re hearing them from other places and then it’s catching them off guard.”

In another episode of TAKEAWAYS, Cameron talked with singer and apologist Alisa Childers about facing doubts in the Bible and Christianity. After being challenged by an agnostic pastor, Childers said she struggled with doubts about the Bible and the foundations of her faith which led her into apologetics.

Childers says that the study strengthened her faith.

“You can’t exaggerate how important it is that if a doubt pops up or if a question pops up, do not push those things down and ignore it and try to pretend like it’s not there,” Childers said. “We have to take those things to the Lord, and God can handle that stuff.”

Movieguide® previously reported:

Instead of walling off culture, Childers and Cameron agreed that the Bible tells us to go out into the world with the good news.

“In fact, a bunch of my apologist friends are starting to go on TikTok and just answering short skeptical questions,” she said. “I think going into those arenas as Christians is so vital and to do good quality content too.”

“We’re living in a time, and we always have, where Christians need to be really critical about what they’re taking in,” she continued. “It doesn’t mean you can’t watch it, but we want to make sure that we’re thinking, that we’re not just absorbing. We’re saying okay does that line up with reality? Does that line up with scripture? What is this show wanting me to take away? What are they wanting me to believe when I walk away? I think that’s a much better way to engage with entertainment.”
