Spotify Purchases Music Guessing Game ‘Heardle’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Spotify just announced that they bought Heardle, a music recognition trivia game that’s based on the super-popular word game, Wordle.

This is the latest move the music streaming service has made in an effort to make Spotify more interactive. This includes video, livestreaming, and podcasts.

Heardle asks users to guess a song based on the opening notes. Players get six chances to get the song, which changes each day.

There won’t be any major changes to the game, and users can still play the game on the website. The only big change is that players can now listen to the full song on Spotify after they finish guessing.

Heardle is available in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Spotify has said that they plan on making the game available in more countries in the coming months.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said that the music streaming service is emphasizing “music discovery” moving forward in an effort to keep users on the app.

“Further down the road, we are also planning to integrate Heardle and other interactive experiences more fully into Spotify to allow music lovers to connect more deeply with artists and challenge friends — and have some fun in the process,” the company said.

Movieguide® previously reported on another deal Spotify made with Chernin Entertainment:

Peter Chernin, founder of Chernin Entertainment, signed a multiyear first look deal with Spotify to turn the app’s original podcasts into movies and television shows.

Spotify and Chernin Entertainment will partner 50-50 on the new projects, Variety reports.

Eventually, a development exec will report to Chernin Entertainment’s president, Jenno Topping, and Spotify’s chief content officer and advertising business officer, Dawn Ostroff, about potential projects.

“At Spotify, we believe that the extraordinary growth of audio will continue to attract the world’s great creators and make podcasts a premier destination for original IP,” Ostroff said in a statement. “As we continue to expand our content ambitions, we are thrilled to collaborate with Peter Chernin, who, along with his exceptional team, are the perfect partners to help us share these stories with audiences across mediums and around the world.”

Chernin, chairman and CEO of Chernin Entertainment, told Variety, “We have spent a lot of time since the birth of the company thinking about IP.”

“What’s impressed us is the innovation in storytelling on podcast platforms,” Chernin added. “They are telling stories with no images – just dialogue and sound effects.”

The process of picking potential projects from over 250 original series is just getting underway.

Chernin Entertainment has produced movies like FORD VS. FERRARI, HIDDEN FIGURES and THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, as well as scripted series’ TRUTH BE TOLD, SEE and NEW GIRL
