THE CROWN Resumes Production After Queen Elizabeth’s Death

By Movieguide® Contributor

THE CROWN has resumed filming after halting production to honor Queen Elizabeth’s recent passing.

The Netflix show is currently filming its sixth and final season. Elizabeth Debicki, who will play Princess Diana, was spotted on set in a town near Barcelona, Spain.

Based on the outfit she’s wearing, royal fans have figured out that THE CROWN is shooting scenes from Diana’s 1997 trip to Bosnia, where she met with children and landmine victims.

After the Queen’s death, Peter Morgan, the show’s writer, said, “THE CROWN is a love letter to her, and I’ve nothing to add for now, just silence and respect. I expect we will stop filming out of respect too.”

THE CROWN paused production last Friday, and will also suspend production the day of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral out of respect for the late monarch.

Movieguide® previously reported on the last season of THE CROWN:

Netflix’s THE CROWN will get a sixth season after all.

The critically acclaimed drama, created by Peter Morgan, announced in January that the show would end with season five, stating that it’s the “perfect time and place to stop.”

However, this announcement of a sixth season goes back to Morgan’s original plan for the show to run for six seasons, following the royals into the 21st century.

Morgan said, “As we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons. To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix said, “The Crown keeps raising the bar with each new season. We can’t wait for audiences to see the upcoming fourth season, and we’re proud to support Peter’s vision and the phenomenal cast and crew for a sixth and final season.”

The last season of THE CROWN will lead into the early 2000s.
