Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks Chaplain Jonathan Evans: ‘God Will Use Your Greatest Misery’

In a new testimonial video from I Am Second, Jonathan Evans shared his experience as the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks’ Chaplain and his journey to faith.

The former NFL player and Baylor Bear revealed that while he was the son of a pastor, his heart was set on winning football games.

However, his priorities changed once he discovered the victory he could have in Christ.

“Winning. That’s what I had gotten used to from a very young age,” Evans says in the video. “I wanted to make sure that I shined and that people knew my name based on my athletic ability and what I was able to do. That’s where I thought I would find my value and, ultimately, find myself.”

After playing football for Baylor University, the Dallas Cowboys drafted Evans in 2005.

But his dream of playing in the NFL fell flat after the Cowboys released Evans, and he found himself in the European Developmental League.

Lacking purpose, Evans recalled the moment he called out to God for direction.

“It was a revelation where God was telling me, ‘You’ve been doing this for you all this time, and now you’re going to do it for me,'” Evans remembered about his time in Europe. “I realized, ‘That’s why God has me here; that’s why I play this game.'”

Evans struggled with how to balance his love for football and his faith but eventually followed God’s call in his life to enroll at Dallas Theological Seminary.

Five months into the program, Evans found that his call to ministry was not entirely removed from football and became the Chaplain for the Cowboys.

“I was used to winning, and I had to learn how to lose in order to become a winner again,” Evans shared. “God will use your greatest misery when he takes you to your greatest ministry. He never wastes anything.”
