NHL Star Mike Fisher Shares Moment He Found God: ‘I Had A New Purpose… To Glorify God’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Former NHL player Mike Fisher recently shared about his faith journey and the difference God makes in his life.

Fisher joined the NHL when he was just 19 years old.

“[I was] making a lot of money and making bad choices,” Fisher shared. “There was emptiness.”

He was living with his cousin during this time, who saw that Fisher was struggling with his newfound fame and money. His cousin brought him to a Bible study, where Fisher read Luke 9:23-26:

23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross [a]daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? 26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels. (NKJV)

“That just broke me right there,” Fisher remembered. “That’s exactly where I was. I was losing my soul…I didn’t know how to deal with the sin and the shame.”

Fisher repented and prayed, dedicating his life to Jesus.

“I was baptized when I was 22 years old and everything changed,” he shared. “I had a new purpose. The purpose was to glorify God with the gift that He gave me.”

He concluded, “I’m so grateful for Him drawing me to Himself, and the grace that He’s extended to me. I know what it is to find true life.”

Fisher has always been very open about his faith. Movieguide® previously reported on he and his wife Carrie Underwood’s faith:

Award-winning country artist Carrie Underwood and her husband, former professional hockey player Mike Fisher, revealed that faith in Christ anchors their relationship.

Married in 2010, Fisher and Carrie’s desire is to set an example for their children and their fans of how faith has affected their lives.

“I want my sons to see me and be like, this is real, this is like a transformed faith, that my dad is different,” Fisher said in a recent I Am Second video titled “Mike and Carrie: God & Country Ep 4 – If I Were Married to Myself.”

“I have unconditional love for my children but God has real unconditional love for his children,” Underwood said.

After Fisher retired from the NHL in 2018, he jumped into the business world at the outdoors company “CATCHIN’ DEERS.” Aside from encouraging people to get outside, Fisher said his ultimate goal is to point people to the truth.

“The reason, a big reason why I love the outdoors and part of our company’s mission is to point people to the Creator and encourage them in their faith,” Fisher said.

Although God uses Fisher and the company, Underwood jokingly wishes that Fisher wouldn’t hunt.

“I feel like this is another way that God has intervened, interjected into our lives,” Underwood added. “We have very different thoughts and feelings.”

“If he could be a vegan, vegetarian, my life would be… almost perfect,” Underwood joked. “That’s the thing about marriage too. Like, you don’t have to be on the same page about everything. If I were married to myself… You know what I mean? That would be terrible.”

However, one thing that the couple does not compromise on is their faith in God.

“First and foremost is our faith. We know God brought us together and trust his judgment,” Underwood said. “And then just finding, kind of, ways to compromise through it. One of the compromises when I wouldn’t have beef and I would shoot all of my meat with a few exceptions to that, but that’s kind of one of the things that we’ve worked on.”

“You know, we’ve been as the world sees it, blessed with a lot of things and doing what we love to do, and money, and fame. But there is no true happiness in the things that everyone sees that should be great with us apart from a real relationship with God and with Jesus,” Fisher added.

“We’re not perfect, we don’t have a perfect marriage, but we have that one thing in our faith and that’s why we’re here is to glorify God with what we’ve been given and hopefully we point people to the answer. That’s what we want to be.”
