On Sunday, actor Alexander Ludwig, known for HUNGER GAMES, celebrated five years of sobriety.
“It’s pretty crazy to me that five years ago to the day, I was so lost, so confused and so scared about where my life would go,” Ludwig said on Instagram. “All I knew was that I had an issue and a problem that needed to be fixed.
“I’ve lost a lot of friends to this disease, so many people didn’t make it and I don’t really know why, because there’s so many reasons why that should have been me and not them. I don’t really want to make this video as, like, congratulatory to myself – it’s really just for anybody that needs to see this,” he continued.
“If you’re struggling, be brave enough to ask for help and take it from me, there really is hope at the end of the road, there really is a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s acutally staggering to me how much has changed in my life since I got out until now,” he added.
While recognizing his five years to the day of sobriety, THE COVENANT star also celebrated three years to the day since his first date with his wife, Lauren. He views the lining up of these anniversaries as more than a coincidence, somewhat like a divine highlight of what he has gained since giving up alcohol.
“It’s amazing what can happen when you decide to love yourself and commit to loving yourself and growing every day as a human being as opposed to satiating these impulses we all have,” Ludwig said.
Ludwig concluded by sharing a poem he wrote while in rehab:
“Look into the pond my son and tell me what you see
If nothing else do ask yourself, who stares back at me.
There was a time the sun would shine, the pond was crystal clear,
But now it’s muddied with the question, how did I end up here.
You’ve strayed from your own values but your heart it still remains,
And like the murky water only time will help it change.
So in that time, be good my son; be mindful, selfless, and true.
So when that muddy water settles, you love he who stares back at you.”
Ludwig also starred in the Netflix Christmas movie, OPERATION CHRISTMAS DROP.
A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
OPERATION CHRISTMAS DROP is a romantic comedy on Netflix about a Congressional aide named Erica, who’s forced by her boss to travel to Gaum and work over the holidays. While at Andersen Air Force base, Erica clashes with Capt. Andrew Jantz, who knows her assignment is to find reasons to defund the facility. Despite early tensions, Andrew and Erica begin to see that first impressions aren’t everything. Andrew is passionate about giving and models it for Erica. She starts to realize her boss’ folly in wanting to defund the base. However, a surprise event catches Erica off guard. Eventually, she must decide what’s important, her job or helping people in need.
OPERATION CHRISTMAS DROP is a bit cookie-cutter in its story and could use better comedy. However, the movie’s historical background, good performances and heartfelt messages overshadow any blandness. The movie is full of patriotism, selfless giving and family values. Finally, although there’s no mention of the Nativity or Jesus, the movie strongly promotes Christian, biblical values such as humility, sacrifice and love. OPERATION CHRISTMAS DROP is a movie families can enjoy together.
