Chicago Bears Head Coach Leads ‘Like Jesus’ After Studying Bible

By Movieguide® Contributor

The Chicago Bears head coach, Matt Eberflus, discussed his faith and the change he saw in his life once he committed himself to studying the Bible.

While he grew up in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Eberflus never seriously studied Jesus until he was an adult.

“My whole life I was studying football, of course, and I was studying military history. But I never really studies the man Jesus – never studied Him. And I just said, ‘I’m diving into it,’” he explained on the Sports Spectrum Podcast.

Eberflus began with “So, You Want to Be Like Christ?” by Charles Swindoll, a book he found in the religious section at Barnes & Noble.

“I read that, and I’ve read [a] multiple number of his books,” Eberflus said. “About seven years ago, I started doing the One Year Bible, so I’ve done it seven times now.”

Since his commitment to studying the Word, Eberflus has seen a major change in himself and how he views Christianity.

“When you’re walking with the Lord, He kind of reveals things to you and shows you where it’s going. And our call is really to bring others to Christ…lead like Jesus,” he explained. “And that’s what we’re trying to do.”

“It’s remarkable how He cleans…and how you change from the inside out. And you can affect other people,” he said.

The Bear’s coach added that he has learned “emotional stability, how to have self-control, how to really be yourself and be one with Him” since starting to take his faith seriously.

These lessons have come out of a closeness with God.

“The closer you got to God, the more truth you see,” he explained. “Sometimes its revealing, and you have to get on your knees and pray and say, ‘Lord, you know, I want to be like you. And please take this away from me… And that’s the walk you have every day. It’s ‘take up your cross’ that to me is so important.”

Eberflus explained that he lives every day according to Matthew 22:37-39.

“It says, ‘Love the Lord with all your heart and your soul. And the second thing is to love you neighbor as yourself,’” he said. “So that, to me, are the two most important commandments, and that’s how we’re going to live.”

However, as Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery’s rookie contract ended, he focused his eyes on the God of peace.

“I really [haven’t] thought too much about that,” Montgomery said. “Honestly, like I said, I don’t look to give any validation to anyone but God.”

“I live my life. I’m on a spiritual journey right now for myself, and being sure that I just always focus, and keeping the main thing the main thing. That really is God, so I’m going to go out every day with the opportunity to be the best I can be. When it’s all said and done, God will take me and put me where I need to be,” he added.
