THE HIDING PLACE Producer Reveals Emotional Journey to Prepare for Movie
By Movieguide® Contributor
A.S. Peterson, writer and producer of CORRIE TEN BOOM’s THE HIDING PLACE, opened up about how he prepared for the movie.
“I went into it with a lot of fear and trembling as soon as I understood the seriousness of it,” Peterson said.
Peterson revealed that he flew to Europe, visited Corrie ten Boom’s real hiding place in Harlem, Amsterdam, and then went to Germany to visit the concentration camp ten Boom and her sister were put in.
“That was just an unbelievable experience,” he said. “Until you’ve been in a concentration camp, you can’t even fathom how big the evil was.”
“To stand in the place where prisoners were executed to walk into the gas chamber and then to literally stand in front of the oven where Betsie ten Boom was disposed of. That’s a process of research that fundamentally changed my relationship to the story,” he continued.
“It’s a privilege for me to take the impact of that story and hopefully deliver it to a new generation because it’s not a story I think should be forgotten,” Peterson said in another interview.
The movie is a musical and theatrical adaptation of ten Boom’s book, “The Hiding Place.” Movieguide® reported, “The version coming to movie theaters was filmed live during a four-week, sold-out run at the Soli Deo Center in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2022.”
Peterson shared that the movie gives a lot of significance to ten Boom’s sister, Betsie. Betsie played a vital part in the story of “The Hiding Place.” In other adaptations of the story, she has often been overshadowed by Corrie.
“Betsie ten Boom is the real hero of this story in a lot of ways,” Peterson said. “Lots of people know the name Corrie ten Boom, but Betsie ten Boom is not talked about as much. And Betsie is one of the most remarkable people I have ever encountered.”
The movie’s synopsis reads:
“World War II. Darkness has fallen over Europe, and the boots of the Third Reich echo through the streets. But on a quiet city corner in the Netherlands, some choose to resist. Corrie Ten Boom and her family risk everything to hide Jewish refugees by the hundreds, and they ultimately face the consequences when they are discovered. The Hiding Place is their story—a story of faith, hope, love, and forgiveness in the face of un-thinkable evil.”
Saturday, August 5, will be the last day to see CORRIE TEN BOOM’S THE HIDING PLACE in theaters.
