Could MAGNUM P.I. Be Renewed for Season 6?

By Movieguide® Contributor

MAGNUM P.I.’s fifth and final season will air this fall, but the show could return for another season due to a new deal with Freevee.

Starting September 1, the first four seasons of MAGNUM P.I. will land on Amazon’s free streaming service, Freevee, a platform that has previously brought back canceled series. Depending on how many viewers the show draws, MAGNUM P.I. could see a sixth season and more.

In the past, Freevee has opted to revive shows that have found popularity on its platform. For example, the American-Filipino crime drama ALMOST PARADISE was dropped by WGN after only one season. After it landed on Freevee and generated significant public interest, the platform decided to bring back the cast for a second season, which debuted at the beginning of 2022.

Following a similar path, AMERICAN RUST was canceled after one season on Showtime. Again, after streaming on Freevee and drawing a large audience, the show was revived for a second season.

If MAGNUM P.I. finds new life on Freevee, it wouldn’t be the first time the show has been returned. The reboot of the 1980s classic, which starred Tom Selleck, began its run on CBS in 2018, MSN reported. After four seasons, it was dropped due to licensing issues but was quickly picked up by NBC for a fifth season.

While the show’s run on cable television might be over, only time will tell if the show is gone for good or if it will return again.

Movieguide® previously reported:

MAGNUM P.l. is coming to an end as NBC announced they would not be renewing the show past season 5.

The decision to end the show came a year early as the options on the cast were due to expire on June 30th. The show, however, will have new episodes releasing through the 2023-2024 season before coming to a close.

With the ongoing writer’s strike, networks have been very conservative with the shows they have continued to produce, passing on many pilots and dropping most bubble shows. With no knowledge of when scripted shows can begin production again, the network opted to cancel the show rather than renew early.

Should they bring back MAGNUM PI?
