Natalie Grant Sings National Anthem at GOP Debate: ‘I Love This Country’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian artist Natalie Grant cited her patriotism as the reason why she performed the national anthem at the first Republican presidential debate last week.

“I’m patriotic. I like to keep politics to those who know how to do that best,” Grant told Fox News. “I love my country, I love my anthem, and it’s just an honor.”

She pointed out that she has also performed at Democratic Party events.

“This isn’t about endorsing a candidate or a party,” Grant said in an interview with The Christian Beat. “I simply love this country, and I love what our anthem represents.”

She continued, “At a time when public faith in our democracy is low, I’m excited to be a part of the democratic process by doing what I do best — and that’s performing. I’ve had the distinct privilege of singing at events for both Republicans and Democrats in the past, and this is no different. It’s a privilege.”

One of Grant’s latest musical projects is a duet with country superstar Dolly Parton, “Step By Step.” The song will appear on Grant’s upcoming “Seasons” album.

“In 1996, ‘Step By Step’ is a song I would blast on cassette in my beat up Volkswagen Golf as I drove to my job at Medicare,” Grant said of the track. “The dream when I moved to Nashville was music, not Medicare, but I had to do what was necessary to keep going. This song was my reminder to keep putting one foot in front of the other. If you would’ve told me then that one day, I would not only be recording this song, but doing it with an international icon, I never ever would’ve believed it. I still can’t believe it.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Grant’s “Seasons”:

Christian artist and nine-time Grammy award nominee Natalie Grant has released a new single with Dolly Parton as part of her new album, “Seasons.”

The duo covered Whitney Houston’s “Step By Step,” “dubbed one of Houston’s best songs,” marking the first time Grant and Parton have recorded together.

Parton isn’t the only artist joining Grant on “Seasons.”

Grant also collaborated with “Mary Mary with their first re-recorded version of the smash hit ‘Shackles (Praise You),’ Tasha Cobbs Leonard on Paul Simon’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and her mother and daughters on Bob Dylan’s ‘Make You Feel My Love.’”

She already released “You Will Be Found” with Cory Asbury, which is “currently #3 on Mediabase Audience Chart.”
