Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray Glorifies God Amid Historic Athletic Career

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray gives glory to God amid his historic athletic career.

Murray landed a number one pick in the 2019 NFL draft, securing his spot with the Arizona Cardinals. The same year, the MLB’s Oakland Athletics drafted the athlete at number nine.

“Glory to God,” he told reporters after becoming the “first athlete to be selected in the first round of both the NFL and Major League Baseball drafts.”

Murray’s trajectory to the NFL began with the Oklahoma Sooners. In his first season with the team (2018), he threw for over 4,300 yards and 42 touchdowns. He rushed for over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns. Murray’s outstanding performance resulted in a Heisman Trophy win, an award presented to the best college football player.

After his NFL and MLB selections, the athlete decided to pursue football.

Murray signed his rookie contract and became the Cardinal’s starting quarterback. He showcased his dual-threat abilities in his rookie season, passing for over 3,700 yards and rushing for over 500 yards. He was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year for his impressive debut season.

Murray continued to improve in his second year (2020), passing for over 3,900 yards and rushing for over 800 yards. His performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection.

In an Instagram post, Murray reflected on his career and unexpected success.

“Excitin’ times. I can’t help but feel overwhelmed with gratefulness and humility. The reality is that I am 5’10 with a non-traditional playstyle. I am the first black and Asian quarterback in the NFL. I look and play like no one before me and with that comes some hate and negativity.”

“I refuse to internalize or acknowledge that negativity,” he continued. “How immature would I be to lean into the toxicity when I am overwhelmed with an abundance of love and support from the best fans in the world. I’m in the business of proving the people that believe in me right and inspiring the next generation of youth culture.”

Thank you, Mom, Dad and my family, truly my heart and soul…I’m just a kid from Texas living out my dream, thank you, God,” he concluded.

Last season, Murray suffered a torn ACL. After his surgery, Murray updated fans.

“ACL surgery was successful, thank you for all the love and prayers. I appreciate the support and positivity more than I can express; I’ll be back.”

The Arizona Cardinals are a few days away from their first regular season game, and they have not yet named a starting quarterback, as Murray is listed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.
