Marvel’s DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Headed in More Violent Direction

By Movieguide® Contributor

Amid a pause in production due to the actors’ strike, Marvel’s upcoming DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN series has changed direction as new directors and showrunners push it toward more violent content.

After releasing head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman during the strike-induced pause, Marvel brought on Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead to lead the show, adding Dario Scardapane as a showrunner.

These new additions will overhaul the show’s creative direction, bringing it down a darker, grittier, more violent path.

Following the story of a blind lawyer turned superhero, DAREDEVIL previously aired a TV series on Netflix in the mid-2010s. While the show sported a positive, uplifting storyline—even winning a Movieguide® Epiphany Award—its audience was limited because of excessive violence and gore.

The upcoming Disney+ version of the show is meant to continue where the Netflix series left off, with Charlie Cox reprising his role as the superhero. However, it was originally set to scale back the violence to be more accessible to a wider audience.

“This character works best when he’s geared toward a slightly more mature audience,” Cox said last December. “My instinct is that on Disney+ it will be dark but it probably won’t be as gory.”

Before the strikes shut down production, nearly half of the first season had been filmed, giving Marvel enough material to get a sense of the show. With months to overhaul the production team, Ord and Corman were released as the series decided to embrace the gore and violence found in the previous seasons.

Co-directors Benson and Moorhead are coming off directing two episodes of LOKI’s second season. Scardapane most recently worked as a writer and producer on Prime Video’s JACK RYAN.

As Benson, Moorhead and Scardapane bring the series back to its darker roots, they will hopefully continue to emphasize the uplifting story found in previous seasons.

Marvel and Disney+ are looking to change up DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN’s creative direction.

Variety confirmed that head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman have “parted ways” with the streaming platform and that Disney+ is on the hunt for new writers to “revamp” the existing material.

DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN is a continuation of the Netflix series DAREDEVIL, which told the story of Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind attorney and vigilante hero with super-senses.

“With less than half of the series’ 18-episode order shot prior to the beginning of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Marvel has also released the directors for the remaining episodes of the season,” Variety continued. “Some elements of the already shot material will be used going forward, but Marvel is looking to take the show in a new creative direction.”
