Liam Neeson’s THE ICE ROAD 2 to Film in Australia

By Movieguide® Contributor

Liam Neeson returns as a truck driver in THE ICE ROAD sequel, THE ICE ROAD 2: ROAD TO THE SKY.

The first film, THE ICE ROAD, was set in Canada, but the sequel will shift to Nepal. Therefore, shooting locations will move from North America to Australia.

Movieguide® praised THE ICE ROAD’s “strong moral, redemptive worldview stressing compassion, sacrifice and courage.” Part of the review reads:

THE ICE ROAD is an adventure thriller streaming on Netflix. It stars Liam Neeson as Mike McCann, an ice road truck driver. Mike takes a dangerous job to deliver heavy drilling equipment across a melting road to save the lives of 26 men trapped in a mine in Northern Canada. Mike is joined by two other truck drivers, including a young but tough Native American woman and the man who hired them. Along with them is Mike’s brother, a top-notch mechanic. The team must brave stalled engines, cracked ice and violent pressure waves, but the real threat turns out to be one they never saw coming.

THE ICE ROAD is action packed, with a tremendous jeopardy. In fact, the deadly threats to the mission never stop. Liam Neeson excels in another role that fits him like a glove. The rest of the cast is really good, especially Marcus Thomas, who plays Neeson’s brother. THE ICE ROAD has a strong moral, redemptive worldview stressing compassion, sacrifice and courage. However, it’s marred by at least 46 obscenities and profanities. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.

Per Deadline, “The sequel will see Neeson return as ‘big-rig’ ice road driver Mike McCann who, honoring his late brother’s last wish, travels to Nepal to scatter his ashes on Mt. Everest. While on a packed tour bus traversing the deadly 12,000 ft. terrain of the infamous Road to the Sky, Mike and his mountain guide encounter a group of Nepalese mercenaries and must fight not only to save themselves and the busload of innocent travelers, but also the local villagers’ homeland.”

With the shooting location change to Australia’s Victoria State, “production will create nearly 600 employment opportunities for Victorian screen industry workers and extras, with 15 locals taking on leading Head of Department roles. The film will inject over ¢30 million into state economy – boosting jobs, the economy and attracting visitors from across the globe to Melbourne,” VicScreen reported.

Natalie Hutchins, Victoria’s acting minister for creative industries, stated, “Victoria is a sought-after destination for international productions because of our phenomenal locations, state-of-the-art screen infrastructure and renowned local talent and crew. ICE ROAD 2 is part of a strong pipeline of local and international productions that will power our screen industry this year, creating jobs, boosting local businesses and showcasing Victoria to the world.”

VicScreen tweeted, “Hollywood action star Liam Neeson is back in Victoria, shooting his latest film ICE ROAD 2: ROAD TO THE SKY! Filming across Victoria including Walhalla, it also stars @bernardcurry, Geoff Morrell and Grace O’Sullivan.”

According to Variety, producers for the film include Code Entertainment’s Al Corley, Bart Rosenblatt and Eugene Musso. Also on the list of producers are Shivani Rawat of ShivHans and Hensleigh, Lee Nelson and David Tish of Envision Media Arts (EMA).
