Savannah Guthrie Encourages Fans to Come to God ‘With Your Doubt’

TODAY show anchor Savannah Guthrie explains why she chose to be vulnerable in her newly released faith-based book “Mostly What God Does.”
“It’s a book about faith, you know, and I definitely never thought I’d be writing a book that was so personal,” Guthrie told Drew Barrymore. “It’s like taking my heart and putting it out there, and that’s completely terrifying, but when given the opportunity, I couldn’t say no because, as all my friends know and my family, my faith is my cornerstone.”
“It’s what makes me tick,” she told TODAY. “It’s what makes me joyful. It’s what helps me navigate the world and stresses and disappointments and fears.”
“[Faith] is so important to me, and I felt like I had something good to say about God. I mean, the book is called ‘Mostly What God Does,’ and the rest of the sentence is, mostly what God does is love you,” she continued.
While Guthrie has a large platform thanks to her time on the TODAY show, her walk in faith has been ordinary, something she hopes shines through in her book and helps people connect with her story.
“I’m hoping that it’s really inspiring and talks, you know, from a point of view of just a regular person who has had ups and downs and seasons of faith and seasons of not faith,” Guthrie said. “And I’ve walked through all of those things and these are just a few things I’ve learned along the way.”
One of the aspects of faith that Guthrie focuses on is doubt and how to go about questioning God in a way that is honoring to Him.
“My big message of the book is to come as you are. Come with your doubt. God is not asking for stoic, perfect people and some pious presentation that’s phony,” she explained. “I think we’re asked to bring our doubts, our despair, bring our whole selves, but just come.”
“When I’ve had my own setbacks or disappointments, or I look around the world and see injustice and why did good people suffer, why would a good God allow that, you know? Believing that God is good and loves you and is well-intentioned towards you and has a plan and won’t let this be the final answer to this earth; that there is a better time coming,” Guthrie added. “I mean, that is what faith is, and it requires a leap of faith.”
“But a thing I figured out a long time ago, you know, I think anybody of faith has probably at some point asked themselves, like what if it’s all made up, what if it’s not true…There’s no way we can for sure know. I mean, this is why it’s faith, you know,” she continued. “We’re not going to get to know for certain. We’re not going to get scientific proof, not in this life. But what I realized is I would rather spend my life hopeful and believing and be wrong in the end than spend my life hopeless and cynical and be right in the end. Being hopeful and full of faith is just a better way to live.”
“It doesn’t matter your background. It doesn’t matter your faith. When you read this book, you’ll be touched,” Guthrie’s TODAY co-host Hoda Kotb said. Guthrie added, “I hope it’s something that speaks to everyone.”

As a child, Guthrie went to church “three times a week” with her family and quoted her sister as saying, “‘God was the sixth member of our family,’ in our family of five.”
Faith has remained a huge part of her life, and Guthrie is passionate about sharing God’s love with other people.
“I’ve been blessed and not because things worked out in my career, though thankfully they did. Or because I’m so blessed to have a family that I wanted for so long, and thankfully I do,” she toldPEOPLE. “I’m blessed because God is present to me, and he loves me. And guess what? He loves you, too. And that’s the whole reason I wrote the book. That’s it. I had something good to share and I just had to share it.”
