How SUITS Spinoff Differs From Original

By Movieguide® Contributor

Since the announcement of the SUITS spinoff SUITS L.A., fans have eagerly waited to hear what they can expect from the new show. As more information emerges, it looks like the series will be much different from the original.

Many fans wondered if the spinoff would see any of the original cast members return. That likely will not be the case as Stephen Amell was just announced as the show’s star.

Per Deadline, “ARROW star Stephen Amell is set as the lead in NBC drama pilot SUITS L.A., a new extension of the SUITS universe from Aaron Korsh, creator and writer of the original series. Production is scheduled to start in late March in Vancouver.”

When the news of Amell’s new role was released, he posted a witty comment on Instagram.

“For the record, I’m a 42 regular,” the star wrote.

As for the other differences, the type of law that SUITS L.A. deals with will differ from that of Pearson Specter Litt.

According to Screen Rant, “One of the biggest differences between SUITS L.A. and the original SUITS is the type of law that the two law firms follow. The lawyers at Pearson Specter Litt focus primarily on corporate law but also practice litigation on a regular basis. Corporate lawyers like Jessica Pearson and Louis Litt focus on the laws that apply to the creation and operation of companies. They also negotiate and coordinate mergers and acquisitions. On the litigation side, the lawyers in SUITS go to court to enforce or defend the rights of clients – Harvey Specter is known for this type of law.”

“However, Black Lane Law, the law firm in SUITS L.A., will focus on entertainment law. Entertainment lawyers focus on things like negotiating contracts for entertainers, protecting copyrights and trademarks, and following filming laws. It’s unclear what specific aspects of entertainment law Ted Black, Stuart Lane, and Erica Rollins will focus on. Based on the way SUITS handled corporate law, it’s possible the characters will cover all areas of this focus of law,” Screen Rant continued.

While fans’ reception to the new show is unknown, many people in the entertainment industry believe that by “making SUITS L.A. extremely different from the previous series, the creative team sets the show up for success.”

Movieguide® previously reported on SUITS:

Despite first airing in 2011, Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) and Michael Ross (Patrick J. Adams) topped 2023’s streaming charts as SUITS became the number one TV show streamed with the most minutes watched.

According to Nielsen, “While the writers’ strike had an impact on new content this year, the popularity of SUITS was undeniable, landing in the top spot of Nielsen’s top 10 list for a record 12 straight weeks—longer than Netflix originals OZARK (11 weeks), YOU (8 weeks) and STRANGER THINGS (8 weeks). During its 12-week run at the top, audiences watched more than 36.8 billion minutes of the legal dramedy.”

Overall, SUITS totaled 57.7 billion minutes streamed, which means it finished with more minutes streamed than THE OFFICE did in 2020 (57.13 billion minutes).
