How the MLB is Paying Tribute to 9/11

Every year following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the MLB pays tribute to the victims. This year is no different.

“In addition to teams holding pregame tributes around the league, all players, managers and coaches for the Mets and Yankees will have the option to wear NYC first-responder hats with their team logo on the side,” the MLB reported. “Their opponents, the Blue Jays (facing the Mets) and Royals (Yankees) have the option to wear NYPD or FDNY caps during batting practice.”

Others in uniform throughout the league “will wear a memorial 9/11 ribbon patch on the right side of their hats.”

Other MLB employees will be participating in meal packing for the City Harvest food bank.

“The volunteer meal-packing project in New York is one of 18 taking place across the country on Wednesday, with the goal of packing 6 million non-perishable meals that will be delivered to Feeding America-affiliate food banks,” the league reported.

Yankees pitcher Luke Weaver is among those participating in the event. Movieguide® recently reported on the athlete’s faith:

“That’s been my prayer to God, like, hey, just give me the strength to come off of a bad outing and be the same guy,” Weaver told the “Sports Spectrum” podcast. “And I think that He showed me a lot.”

However, it’s been a long road for Weaver to get to this point. After months of struggling, he had a breakthrough moment when he realized the solution to his trials lay with Paul.

“In the midst of my struggle, I’m praying hard and I’m in 2 Corinthians 12:10 which talks about Paul and this thorn in his side. And he’s battling against trying to make it about himself,” Weaver said. “And he’s just like, all right, you put this thorn there for a reason because you’re allowing me to know your power. Like, in my weakness, there’s so much power in that.”

League employees packed meals last year, too.

“Our MLB employees always want to do everything they can to roll up their sleeves and give back to the community,” MLB’s senior vice president of social responsibility and community affairs, April Brown, said in 2023. “It’s really a day to give back and remember those lost on 9/11. For our employees, it’s a day for team building, enjoying one another and doing something really good in the community.”

Ryan Dempster and Kevin Millar, co-hosts of the MLB network hit show INTENTIONAL TALK, were two of the MLB’s biggest names at the event.

“People helping people is an amazing thing. If we are not going to do that, what do we have? There are people out there who are not as fortunate. They need help. They need food,” Dempster said of the event. “To be able to come here and do this and put this all together with this crew for Meal Pack for 9/11, it’s a privilege and an honor to be able to do something like this.”

“It’s a great scene to be able to come here and be a part of this and help,” Millar added. “You know what, you could see everybody together. Obviously, a sad day 22 years ago, but helping others is what this is all about.”
