Skillet Frontman Pays Tribute to Late Fan: ‘God Is Close to the Brokenhearted’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Skillet frontman John Cooper recently paid tribute to a late fan, reminding the audience that “God is close to the brokenhearted.”

“I literally have not done [this] the entire tour [or] all of last year and I probably won’t do it a single other time on the tour,” Cooper said during a Jan. 16 show.

He shared that he had met a mother and daughter before the show who told him that they had lost their husband and father just two weeks before the concert. He was a “huge Skillet fan so she came in honor of him.”

Cooper shared their story on stage, telling the audience, “Everybody in this room needs to give a lot of love and a lot of prayer and a lot of support for people that are hurting because our God is close to the brokenhearted.”

He then played “Stars,” which was played at the late fan’s funeral.

Cooper frequently shares his faith, both on stage and off. During an interview with Crosswalk, he shared that “God was calling me to be someone that would defend the faith and that would stand up for Christian morality.”

In another interview with CBN, the rocker talked about how Skillet has toured with both Christian and secular acts over the years.

“I think Skillet is definitely an enigma in a lot of ways,” Cooper explained. “I love it because Skillet has just been so authentic. And I think it’s because we’re real. There might be some people that don’t get it. When we go play with a metal band, they might go, ‘They are that Christian band. What’s that all about? I don’t get that.’ But they always get won over by us because we’re unapologetically us and we’re very inclusive.”

He continued, “Sometimes people don’t quite get what we do. Usually that’s not the case. But if there is a complaint it’s ‘Hey, I can listen to a Skillet record and not even know this is a Christian band. It’s just not obvious enough.’ I totally know where they’re coming from in that. I think that’s even fair because we’re kind of doing what we’re trying to do. And to me a great way to evangelize to the world is not necessarily always talking about Jesus, but it’s acting like Jesus. If you’re a plumber, you should have the aroma of Christ on you as you do a good job and you treat people fairly. You do your job to the best of your ability to glorify God and treat people fairly.”
