Monarch Media and Angel Studios are teaming up to turn the popular Christian romance movie A WEEK AWAY into a series.
“A WEEK AWAY has been a very personal endeavor for me from the beginning,” Alan Powell, co-writer of the original movie and the newly-appointed showrunner, told Deadline. “I grew up a pastor’s kid who went to Christian camp every summer, and I have vivid memories of those moments even to this day.”
He continued, “It’s been an honor to see the original film resonate with so many people, and we couldn’t be more excited to continue the story through the series with our partners at Angel Studios.”
A WEEK AWAY: THE SERIES will star Antonio Cipriano, Cozi Zuehlsdorff, David Koechner, former Disney actress Leigh-Allyn Baker, Sacha Carlson, Ava Jean, Haven Greene, Jason Marsden and Carlos PenaVega.
“We’re very excited about it,” Powell told Crosswalk Headlines. “There are some faces that you’ll recognize, but it’s going to be a lot of new characters as well.”

He shared that many members of the creative team from the movie are returning to work on the show, adding, “We are excited to tell a longer version of the story, dive into these characters a little bit more, do more music, have more fun.”
The original movie, distributed by Netflix, told the story of troubled teen Will, who is given a choice between going to juvenile detention or attending a Christian summer camp. He chooses the camp and, through his friendships with the other campers, goes on a journey of self-discovery.
“We made a film designed to entertain while exploring universal themes of family, friendship and acceptance. There is no better time than right now, and no better partner on the planet than Netflix, to help share that message,” Powell said in a statement given to The Hollywood Reporter.
This isn’t the only exciting new reimagining Monarch Media has in the works. The company recently acquired the rights to Nicholas Sparks’ A WALK TO REMEMBER and plans to make a reboot of the beloved romance movie.
Denise Di Novi, one of the original movie’s producers, said she is grateful for the “opportunity to bring this enduring and inspirational story of faith, hope and love to a new generation,” while fellow producer Hunt Lowry added he’s “delighted to be bringing this timeless story to a new generation of moviegoers.”
Fans of the original A WEEK AWAY can’t wait to see Monarch Media and Angel Studios’ new spin on the popular movie.
