Kelsey Grammer is revisiting the tragic murder of his sister in his new book, Karen: A Brother Remembers, and sharing his hopes for what readers will take away from the story.
“It was very difficult, very challenging,” he said of the writing process during an appearance on FOX & FRIENDS. “I would disappear down a sadness I couldn’t shake.”
The FRASIER actor praised his wife, Kayte Walsh, for giving him “the space” to write the book, adding, “She’s an amazing partner in that way.”
Grammer’s sister Karen was murdered in 1975 after being abducted from her job. She was 18 years old.
“On a human level, I do [forgive the murderer],” he explained. “On a spiritual level…the brother in me is hurt.”
Grammer also shared what he wants readers to take away from Karen: A Brother Remembers.
“The hope of the book is to inspire and to comfort other people, and to search for the goodness that they had in those people that are gone,” he said.

Grammer spoke about the book in an interview with Newsweek, saying, “I’m actually very happy that the response has been emotional, because it came from emotion. It came from what is a shared sadness, a depth of sadness, that we have to go through these things, or that our loved ones are hurt in such a way. And I know that it’s happened to a lot of other people, and I know that when they are faced with just the unspeakable tragedy like Karen’s or like so many other people that are in our headlines, even today, there is a personal, human cost struggle that is forever.”
“From the moment that happens, it’s forever,” he continued. “And so I did think that one of the goals of the book would be to actually extend the hand of love to everybody that’s felt the same way, who will spend the rest of their lives remarking on it, who will relive it. It’ll come up again and again and again, as it does for me.”
In addition to reaching out to other people who have lost loved ones, Grammer also wanted to “breathe life” into his sister and “welcome her into the world,” he told PEOPLE.
“We were Kelsey and Karen, brother and sister,” he said of the writing process. “It was nice to see Karen and nice to see younger Kelsey, too. It became a doorway into this relationship that’s still going on.”
Grammer is still grieving for his sister, but the actor’s recent book is a way of reconnecting with her, as well as sharing her story with the rest of the world.
