Clean comedian Nate Bargatze just released his first book, Big Dumb Eyes: Stories from a Simpler Mind, a feat that surprises him.

“I never really thought I’d be writing a book,” he explained. “We’re not a book that’s better than anybody. We’re the one that just sits there, and it’s a fun read. And then after us you go back to the books that you’re actually going to learn something from.”

Ironically, he spoke about his disdain for reading while at the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation fundraiser in Houston, Texas, an organization on a mission to “make Houston a city filled with readers.”

“I kind of jumped around,” Nate Bargatze said of his reading habits. “Again reading is…just a hard thing. I really do want to do it; I love the idea of it.” He joked that he “probably could’ve used some of the [foundation’s] help.”

But his disdain didn’t keep him from writing Big Dumb Eyes.

“Nate talks about life as a non-genius,” its synopsis bluntly reads. “From stories about his first car (named Old Blue, a clunky Mazda with a tennis ball stick shift) and his travels as a Southerner (Northerners like to ask if he believes in dinosaurs), to tales of his first apartment where he was almost devoured by rats and his many debates with his wife over his chores, his diet, and even his definition of ‘shopping’…Big Dumb Eyes is full of heart. It will make readers laugh out loud and nod in recognition, but it probably won’t make them think too much.”

The comedian also announced a tour with the same name as his book. It kicks off this month in Duluth, Minnesota, and wraps up Dec. 13 in Nashville, Tennessee.

“Can’t wait for you guys to see this new show and tour,” he posted on Instagram. “Apologies to some of you but we did have to move a few shows to a new date so please make sure you’ve checked your tickets. See you soon!”

Last year, Nate Bargatze’s tour grossed over $80 million and sold over one million tickets. He’s also getting ready to make his jump into the entertainment industry with his first-ever feature film THE BREADWINNER, arriving in theaters on March 13, 2026.

“It’s going to be hard to make something and then have to wait to see it,” he said. “I’m used to immediate reactions. Plus, I don’t know the first thing about making a movie. I’m excited to figure it all out — what works, what’s funny, what needs tweaking. It’s going to be a whole new world, and I can’t wait to learn.”

Bargatze’s success is proof that people desire family-friendly content.
