MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING fans want to know all the details of the movie’s dramatic end, and star Simon Pegg has answers.

The final scene sees Pegg’s Benji Dunn bring back “a relic from the first MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE film in one of the most emotionally impactful and demanding scenes he’s portrayed to date.”

Warning: spoilers ahead!

“It was really gratifying. To get to be told what was going to happen to me was kind of exciting. I love that scene,” Pegg, who first appeared in the franchise 20 years ago, told Collider, adding that he was “delighted” with the ending.

“To interact with Krieger’s knife, that prop from MISSION 1, which comes back into MISSION 8, and the fact that it is inserted into me was such an amazing thing,” he continued. “It’s like, I remember seeing that in the movies. I remember seeing that knife spiral to the floor, and then, it’s very, very present in the scene with me and Pom [Kelmentieff].”

When it came to preparing for that scene, Pegg revealed that they had a “medic on set who was advising me as to how I would behave if my lung was collapsing.”

“…she would come up to me at the end of the take and say, ‘That’s really good. You’re doing great. Don’t forget, you can’t take a breath. You’ve only got the breath,’ and so, we had different levels of what we call ‘sweat con.’ So the first section was sweat con one, second sweat con two, etc., etc., but it was great. And I love Pom’s vulnerability in that scene. The fact that she’s only used to taking life, she’s never, ever had to save anybody before,” he explained.

Though the dramatic stunts often take centerstage, Pegg says the MISSION movies are about so much more.

“MISSION is all about so many things. It’s about those big stunts — that’s what everyone always talks about, but MISSION really is about the quiet moments,” he explained. “It’s about the character stuff. It’s about seeing characters fulfill their destiny, redeem themselves, realize that love is more powerful than hate. That’s what is at the center of these movies, and that’s the most fun to play.”

For the opening weekend, Pegg shared a photo of himself and several cast members in a helicopter.

“My team ❤️ @pom.klementieff @wellhayley and @gregtarzandavis. Not pictured, the pilot @tomcruise. So much love for these guys. Happy opening weekend, gang. Let’s take it home.” he wrote.

Movieguide® praised THE FINAL RECKONING’s “Very strong Christian, redemptive, moral worldview,” giving it a -1 for some intense violence and light obscenities. The review reads:

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING is an exhilarating, patriotic, stirring, and profound thriller. It goes from exciting one action setpiece to another while always developing the characters, including supporting characters. It has lots of drama in tense scenes featuring the President. FINAL RECKONING has many Christian allusions. Ethan Hunt is overtly depicted as a compassionate messianic hero. He undergoes a symbolic death and resurrection, and, at one point he’s saved by Grace, the romantic female lead. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING has some intense violence and seven mostly light obscenities. So, it merits caution for older children.

The MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE franchise’s future is unknown, but fans can still catch THE FINAL RECKONING in theaters.
