Gary Sinise is a familiar face to those active in the military and veteran circles and to fans of FORREST GUMP and CSI: NY, but it’s been a little while since he was active in Hollywood.

He says he’d make a comeback if the circumstances were right.

“I can’t leave home for the amount of time that I used to go and shoot a movie or something like that, but if the right thing came along — under the right circumstances and it felt right and the timing was good and it didn’t take me away from home too much — I would absolutely consider it,” Sinise told Fox News Digital.

“It’s all about timing, and it’s all about the project and the people that would be involved in it,” he said. “I’ve been blessed, you know, like I said, when you’re on television on a hit show for nine years (CSI: NY), you can put some money away, and I’ve been able to use that money for good, and you know, now I can kind of be selective about what I’m doing in life.”

Sinise stepped away from film in 2019, when his son, Mac, got bone cancer, and his wife, Moira, got breast cancer. Mac passed away in 2024. Sinise is grateful that his career allowed him to take care of his son.

“I had a blessed career and I financially did well. And I’ve been able to build a foundation,” he said. “I’ve been able to take care of the family.”

“I was able to take care of my son during a very difficult time because he needed round-the-clock nursing care and that’s not paid for by the insurance. So, there were a lot of things I’ve been able to do because I had a successful movie and television career,” said Sinise.

Though he’s not opposed to stepping back into the limelight, his heart is really with his family right now.

“Since losing Mac, I hold my daughters a lot tighter. You think about the things that are really important,” he told PEOPLE.

Sinise has had to say no to a lot of projects, but he recently talked with some people about projects he’d be interested in.

“I’m talking to a few people about a couple of different things that would fit the lifestyle right now a little bit better,” the Movieguide® Awards attendee said. “And that’s important, you know.”

“I got five grandkids. We’re hoping for more. Leaving home for long periods of time is just not anything I want to do,” he explained.

Sinise said that he’s grateful to have worked on some great projects but admits they took him away from his family.

“Right now, I want to stay home a lot more, and I’m fulfilled with the mission of the Gary Sinise Foundation,” he said.

He previously said he chose to act in CRIMINAL MINDS: BEYOND BORDERS because it fit into his organization’s mission.

“I can pick and choose very specifically based on what life is about, and now life is so much more about giving back and trying to serve our veteran community and our first responder community,” he said.

Sinise’s foundation supports veterans, their families and first responders. Sinise also hosts the annual Memorial Day Concert. Next year will be his 20th year hosting.

“Memorial Day is about remembering and honoring those who have sacrificed, given their lives in service to our country over the years,” he said. “We still have over 130,000 Americans buried in 26 different cemeteries overseas because of the sacrifices that were made during World War II and what not. That’s a lot of sacrifice to keep us free over the years.”

It’s clear that Sinise is going to be very intentional about anything he’s involved in — whether that’s taking a new TV role or serving food to veterans.
