Country artist Craig Morgan says he’s had “a great experience” after rejoining the Army Reserves.
“Two years ago in July, I went back into the Army Reserves,” he said during an appearance on “The Matthew West Podcast.” “I reenlisted on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry.”
Morgan was sworn in on the concert venue’s stage over 17 years after he had left the military, hoping to fulfill his original 20 year commitment.
“I feel like an 18-year-old kid, I can tell you,” Morgan told NBC News before the ceremony. “I’m excited, nervous. But humbled. I’m humbled for the opportunity.”
The country singer told Matthew West that, due to some “policy changes” from the Trump administration, he has been “allowed…to stay longer” in the military.
“I get to work with Army recruiting. I work with the Army bands,” Morgan explained. “We’re working on a program now for suicide prevention utilizing music.”
He concluded, “It’s been a great experience.”
Morgan previously spoke to Southern Living about how he went from the Army to the music business and back again.

“I think the influence was always there, but like I said, early on in my life, I didn’t aspire to be a musician as a kid,” he explained. “I wanted to be a policeman, a fireman, a soldier. I wanted to do those kind of things, but I think the influence was always there. But it wasn’t until I was older and in the Army and away from that I started writing songs. And that’s when I kind of reflected back on some of that influence. And I think those things were always a part of me.”
Morgan also touched on the “connection” he feels with his fellow servicemen and women.
“What’s amazing though, and what I have found is there are people that I didn’t serve with that I meet later on, some of these younger soldiers, service members that are coming in…So we have that connection,” he said.
Morgan continued, “Even though we didn’t serve together, we all serve, and we all feel like there’s this really unique bond that is only experienced in the military, even cross branches. You know, I met Marines and sailors, and so on and so forth, that regardless of their branch, we all share a bond that is forever, and it’s linking us together.”
From serving in the Reserves to working with the Army’s band, Morgan’s lifelong commitment to serving our country is truly admirable!
