In 2023, Washington Wizards’ Anthony Davis had just been granted the highest extension in NBA history — but he missed hearing the news because he was busy with his Legos.

He recalled on Craig Melvin’s podcast, “It’s funny because my agent called me my last two extensions, and I wasn’t answering the phone. He was like, ‘Man, you just got paid the highest extension in NBA history, and I can’t get ahold of you.’ ‘I’m sorry, I was building Legos. I apologize.’”

At the time, Davis had been granted a three-year $186 million maximum contract extension. Eight years prior, he had signed a $145 million contract extension with the Pelicans.

Legos are his favorite hobby. The man has an entire collection.

“I love to build Legos,” he said. “My peace…where it’s just like I would listen to music and just be drifted off, it’s doing Legos,” he said on “The Backyard Podcast” in 2024.

Earlier this month, Lego announced there will be a special edition figurine of Davis, complete with a set of crutches and a little Wilson basketball.

Last year, the Dallas Mavericks and Anthony Davis hosted a “Build Your Own Superhero” event where children got to build Lego heroes and draw them with Davis.

“Anthony Davis is an amazing human being, an amazing creative who loves Legos,” said the event curator Daisha Board. “It’s very rare that we have these sort of individuals come and visit, let alone engage and give gifts. So, this is very impactful. They’ll remember this for the rest of their lives.”

“This is my first community event as a Maverick, so I was excited for this all day, to get here and interact with the kids,” Davis said. “It was important for me to be here because I love giving back. I’ve been blessed to be in the position that I am, and there’s nothing greater than giving back to the community.”

A lot of other pro ballers also find enjoyment and peace in building Legos.

Last year, Kevin Durant joked, “I did a couple little 3,000-piece joints, a couple 1,500 — you know what I mean? Something small.” He also shared this advice to an injured player: “Get in tune with yourself a little bit more, and maybe go buy some new Legos to put together, read a couple new books.”

Dereck Lively II said, “There are a lot of times in this day and age when you can lose yourself in the past or in what’s coming up tomorrow. Lego is definitely a point where you can focus on the present.”

These guys prove Legos aren’t just toys. They’re a way to peacefully channel productivity and focus.
